Estate Sale: 2 VW Bugatti Type 35 Replicas

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It’s not often you get the chance to buy a Bugatti, and even rarer to be able to buy two. However, these are the replica VW chassis versions, so, unfortunately, won’t ever be commanding huge prices. But for simple open topped classic motoring, these two would be a great start – coming from an estate sale in Reno, Nevada, and formerly owned by Mark Behar who has an extensive career in Hollywood. There is absolutely no information with the advert about these two – apart from they are manual, and 4 cylinder. These are available for $11,000 (but not sure if that is for one or both) and the advert can be seen here on Craigslist. Thanks to Pat L for this tip!

There is scant information on the advert about these cars or their condition so we have to make an assessment from just the 4 photos provided. There are two models available, a green and yellow one – both likely fiberglass bodies mounted to the VW floorplan, with the original VW engine in the rear. These were cheap to build back in the day, and these ones look like they have been completed to a high standard with plenty of accessories. The green one, the split screen model, has no plate, so perhaps has not been registered yet – so that’s something to consider for the new owner.

The yellow one comes with a ‘Bugatti’ plate, but again no indication of if it has been registered. It honestly looks like these have never been registered or driven on the road, considering their condition, or the cleanliness of the tires and bodywork. These were made by a number of manufacturers over the years, all on the classic VW floorpan so maintenance and repair are easy and inexpensive, as you are working with the bug mechanicals.

If you are interested, you had better move fast – these are up for sale from Friday 30th September and Saturday 1st of October. If I were the new owner, I would perhaps tone down the paintwork and accessories slightly, spent a little bit on the mechanicals, and focus on getting it registered. If you were the new owner, what would you do to these two replicas to get them back on the road again?

Amateur builds, no power train info, and only 4 pictures which show you nothing but the builder flunked windshield 101.

This makes me think of a variation on an old joke: “First prize is a Bugatti replica, second prize is two Bugatti replicas!!”

I think they’d be a lot of fun. Very simple cars to sort out, without the expectation of high performance or perfect finish or recouping a big investment.

Cute cars but for VW powered replicas the price appears to be a tad high.
