Big-Block Project: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
This car may be another example of the debate we see fairly often – is this 1970 Chevelle Super Sport a real deal car or a clone? Because SS 396/454 was an option after 1968, it usually takes documentation to settle the issue. The seller tells us this Malibu has a big-block engine and the fender script says SS 454, so perhaps we’re headed in the right direction. This non-running example is in Valley Head, Alabama, and is available here on eBay where the bid action has gotten to $25,400.
How popular were mid-size muscle cars by the time the 7th decade of the 20th Century began? If the Chevelle Super Sport is the standard, then the answer is “quite”. Though insurance companies had begun to lower the boom in terms of the cost of insuring these autos, the Malibu (and El Camino) still saw brisk activity at an estimated 53,600 SS units. That covers RPO Z25 SS 396 and RPO Z15 SS 454, of which the latter was new that year, replacing the 427 cubic inch V8.
The seller describes this black 1970 Chevelle SS as a project car. If this vehicle was originally an SS 454, the engine has been replaced by another “big block” which does not run (from sitting or other reasons?). The transmission is an automatic and column-shifted as there is no console (bench seat car, with said seat partially being held together with black duct tape). The odometer reading is just shy of 44,000 miles but who knows if that’s authentic.
Provided photography portrays a decent body with shiny paint, which wears a small ding on the raised hood. Some of the exterior brightwork seems to be missing, such as around the wheel well openings. No title is involved but an Alabama registration plus a notarized Bill of Sale will be along for the ride. There’s no discussion of any real rust, so if the engine doesn’t require herculean efforts to get it running, perhaps you could be taking your first spin in this Chevy in a few weeks.

Its at 27000$ for a non documented, non numbers matching, non functioning engine, no brake lines, no wiper lines, and horrible interior?
Is that what these are these going for now ?
As soon as you say chitville. People lose all common sense and shout take my money. No matter how badly the POS screams crush me.. the fool and their money come charging… Unreal. Awhile ago one that was literally nothing but rust went for like 15k if I remember right.

It’s moot in this case, but wouldn’t a matching-numbers 454 verify the car as an SS? Only SS models could be had with the 454, so if the VIN on the dash matches the VIN on the block, it’s genuine. An SS396 can’t be validated like this in 1970, because garden-variety Malibus could be had with the 396/400/402.
Probably, kinda moot on this one though since its an engine from another car.
It says right on the description that it is a non numbers matching car. So the engine is from something else. It will not tell you a thing about the history of this car.

It looks like a solid project, but the color black makes it hard to see rust holes. It looks to have the proper SS round gauge dash. I have no idea if the center console was optional or not but I kind of dig the steering column shifter. I hated the shifter on the column when I was younger but with the strange places they are putting them now (top of dash!!) I wouldn’t change it a bit.
It doesn’t have the gauge package…they are round but not the gauge package. It has the big clock (where the tach should be) and idiot lights where the gauges should be.
