Big Deal Owner: 1984 Zimmer Golden Spirit

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1984 Zimmer Golden Spirit is listed by the nephew of the original owner, who was apparently a titan of real estate in the Henderson, Nevada market. The Golden Spirit has sat idle for a few years and the seller notes that while it is a non-runner due to a dead battery, it remains in excellent cosmetic condition with no obvious sun damage. Find it here on craigslist in Chandler, Arizona for $6K. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Pat L. for the find.

Zimmers were appropriately made in South Florida, which is where I’m guessing many of them found homes after leaving the assembly line. Built on Mustang chassis with Mustang drivetrains, the Golden Spirit is a neoclassical ride for drivers who aren’t exactly shrinking violets. The body on this example looks quite nice, with no obvious accident or paint damage.

The interiors featured gorgeous leather Recaro seats, and acres of leather and plush carpeting everywhere else. As is sometimes the case with cars in the desert states, the interiors can be ravaged by the sun; I’m guessing this one spent most of its time indoors given the high state of preservation. The seller recommends a full fluid change and overall servicing before driving.

It seems lazy to me to not swap in a new battery and see what happens when the key is bumped, but the seller may be trying to maximize every penny of profit given he likely inherited the car. The market for Zimmers is not exactly hot, but I suspect with the overall growing appreciation for 80s icons, a few of these could start to command higher dollars than in the recent past.

I’d drive this I think it’s cool and $6k is a bargain if you ask me. At that price it won’t take long to sell.

Oh, What the Heck………I would drive it TOO and have the fun doing it, enjoying all the grins and grimaces it might cause. Because……when I was in high school my buddies drove ’41 Chevy coupes, little Duece coupes, pan draggin’ 39 Ford coupes, but this here kid had to have a 1941 60S Cadillac Fleetwood. I had class already at 16! And, everybody loved that Cad. On Friday nights I would fill the Cad with the guys, collect 50 cents from each, put that all in the tank and drag the main. Was also great for those “movie drive in” dates!

He might have maximized more profit if he spent $100 bucks on a battery.

It’s still better than all of the cars that haven’t been washed in decades and a filled with garbage.

There are very few rides I don’t want to be seen in. I don’t even want to tow this behind me. What can I say, beauty is in the eye of someone besides me. I must agree, bargain priced if you have a lot of gold chains and big collars in your closet.

Cheesy,,,cheesy…cheesy. Adjust your Wayne Newton look alike toupee, put on the gold chains, glue on chest hair, unbutton polyester shirt with wide pointed collar, and cruise over to your Strip used car lot to see if any waitresses are walking by that you can snag. Living the dream. :)

To be seen driving this thing is automotive equivalent of going shopping in a white leather Elvis stage outfit.

Being that it’s got a mustang drive train I would enhance that drive train and go play with some unsuspecting high performance vehicles lol

You could make some good coin with this car renting it out for photo shoots. My wife’s boss rented one for her wedding and it cost $600.00 for the day. You could also do graduations and birthdays. Being a lifelong resident of Toronto, the possibilities are endless. Diwali, Ramadan, Kwanzaa and Bar Mitzvahs, just off the top of my head.

That area beside the rear window looks to have had water penetration at some point…check the staining.

Is it me or is the dome light in the rear on next to the water damage?

The rental fee was $600. It was probably for sale for $300, but they’d begrudgingly let you return it to them for twice the price.

If you were a franchise owner/strip mall developer in the 1980’s, lived in FL, in your 60’s, wore hawaiian shirts and smoked cigars, this was your car.

For a car with a dead battery, they obviously moved it somehow for the photos, or they are old pictures. But overall this car is proof that money cannot buy good taste!

Canuck is right…..look at listing, trunk light on too…..WTF,..BATTERY DEAD?…no engine shots, cant stand sellers who take improper photos, and why not put a battery in to see what all works…..because it has serious issues is my guess.

I agree with the dome light and water damage comments. Also looking at the Craigslist pictures the rear fender edges have paint scrapes/wear damage. At first glance I hated it. But it is kind of growing on me. ( I must be getting old !)
I think it would look better without the top. It would also then be a great parade vehicle! So the beauty queen has a nice flat place to park her bottom. In fact with the lack of contour on the trunk lid. You could easily park 2 with their feet on the back seat and 2 with their feet parked on the rear steps that you added on either side of the “spare tire” housing.
Yes! Great parade vehicle with the top removed. Lots of “eye ball” and plenty of space to part the sweet young things.

Trunk that square all but negates the advantages of that aerodynamic front. Supercharger helps a little bit. Or in other words – what the hell?

The squared off rear on the roof kills the sleek ?? lines of the front, makes the roof look like a stuck on afterthought made from a packing crate that matches the trunk one, lose the roof and it mightn’t be too bad for a summer cruiser that’s in your face in more ways than one.

We had one of these for sale in the museum. It drove like an old truck. It’s basically a stretched Fox Body Mustang including the body, so it’s certainly not roomy. The workmanship was terrible, like it was amateur built.
