Beautiful 1971 Lancia Fulvia Sport 1600 Zagato

1971 Lancia Fulvia Sport 1600 Zagato

This sweet little 1971 Lancia Fulvia Sport 1600 Zagato is located quite far southeast of Quebec City, Canada, specifically, in Saint-Georges. At that location, it is closer to Maine than to Quebec City. At $40,000 it might be on the higher end of comparable Fulvias. The car is said to have been fully restored in Italy before being imported into the United States in the ’90s. Thank you, Roger, for the tip. You can view more on craigslist.

There are very few photos and very little information in the listing. No miles are documented, there does not appear to be a title, and no VIN is noted either. Out of the three photos provided, none of them show the engine. It is said to have a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine that is connected to a five-speed manual transmission. Nothing is mentioned about it running or driving, but it looks like it should be able to. An electronic ignition has been added to the car along with a Momo steering wheel. A prancing horse emblem sits center of the wheel and there is no explanation for it. The photo of the interior is detailed enough that shows it to be in stunning condition.

For $40,000 you will want to iron out some major details about the car. There are some red flags and hesitations when looking at all that is presented. At the same time, this car would be a really fun vehicle to drive for a multitude of purposes. It could be used as an autocross vehicle, a daily driver, or even some sort of rally car. After seeing this car, now I wish that I could find it in a small scale diecast. I’ll have to look for it. Lancia doesn’t seem to get as much attention as its other Italian rivals. As automotive tastes change and the age range shifts, hopefully, brand interest will start to tick in different directions as well. This Fulvia is too cool to be left out of a car meet up, but still slightly expensive to make that a reality. What do you think?

This is not the type of car to be posted in Craigslist. Fulvia Zagato is a rare car. Has a V4 with a single cylinder head and a pair of Weber side drafts. Think VW VR6. 40K sounds strong and warrants a through inspection as the tin worm is hard to keep at bay with these.

I once had a used lancia beta twin cam 4 banger five speed (not even in the same class here but it did love tin worms 🐛.)
So yes check the engine compartment and rockers, doors etc.

The car had so much torque and front engine support rust that a machine shop helped restore and shore it up . It ran / shifted and cruised very well as the leather with four wheel disc brakes .

I finally traded it after so much battle with rust as it was eating from inside out. I did like it very much though and would like this Fulvia sweet looking beast…

This car was listed on BAT last January. Apparently, the owner couldn’t get it started, and reserve not met at $32,000.

I wonder if there are some “small” towns that would love to give you a ticket for driving a car w/o (or that never had) a front bumper.
The car makers that inSIST on putting in FIXED phony “vent” side windows instead of functional ones or full door glass, would be wise to take a close look at the side windows on the door of 1 of the cheapest made pickups ever

I think rather than the ford/chevy/dodge model for Italy one should look at the Italian cases as each co taking a slot on the quality/sporty/lux gradient (not perfect analogy). lancia seemed above fiat in the later 60s, 70s, early 80s (may B today too). W/in each co is a gradient too. We had several frm these 2 co. The Lancia Beta Coupe was better than our Fiat Spyders (124s of same yrs). I’d say (w/o knowledge) this is a ‘fancy fiat’. If it were a few yrs earlier (Fulvia) I think they were more disable. Yes, 30K$ seems hi…

OK a bit about Lancia’s. I have one of these for sale and I have had a lot of different Lancia’s through the years.
First off this is not a Fiat/Lancia, it is all a Lancia design. The Beta was not a horrible driving car, in fact it was pretty good, and Fiat made some good Fiat/Lancia’s see the Stratos, 037 and Integrale as examples.

But the Lancia cars were true engineering delights. The cars from the 50’s were tops in the world with cars like the Aurelia B24, and Lancia continues through the 60’s. And while the cars were engineering delights the business side of Lancia was pretty incompetent. During the 60’s they had the Flaminia. the Flavia and the Fulvia, a V6 a flat 4 and a V4 powered cars that shared absolutely nothing. This makes great cars but lousy business sense.
Neat things on the Fulvia’s, someone commented on the vent windows not opening and this is by design. There is a button on the dash that raises the rear hatch about an inch and a half, and the rear seat design is to allow airflow as well as the body. With the windows down the car air does not buffet the passengers and flows cleanly through the cars keeping the passengers cool and you are able to talk in normal tones. I drove one of these in August in Miami and it remained cool in the car.
The seats are the most comfortable and supportive seats ever made. Google Jay Leno on this car for more info. But I have driven everything from Jags to Volvo’s and all the German stuff and nothing compares. You can go hours on both curvy mountain roads or highways and they are still comfortable.
This particular car is pretty nice, it has several details letting it down, but I think it is still a mid 30 to 37k car. Get the correct steering wheel and a few other items and I think you will get close to 40. Oh and put the front bumper back on it is only 2 bolts and takes 5 minutes.
As far as looks, well looks are subjective and while this is no 250 GTO I do like the looks of these particularly from behind. It was built for speed and was competitive in class as well as a rally car of choice. As Enzo said the best looking car is the one that finishes first. I much prefer these to the dowdy british cars of the period and I have never understood the looks of american muscle cars in period. The one issue that I do have with the Fulvia Zags is that they look like they are missing rocker panels. I am not sure why they did it that way but it just looks missing.
Lovely little cars and engineers will go gooey over them.

Now that’s the brand that they need to bring back to the U.S. . They wouldn’t have such a gap between the brands and would be able to cher platforms and engines with Chrysler and other brands.

Corgi made a small die cast version of this car… I have one and it got me into this model having never heard of it before finding the toy in an antique shop.
