Bed In Car: 1938 Nash LaFayette

1938 Nash Lafayette

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Listed here on Hemmings for a negotiable $3,800 in Salt Point, New York.  The owner states this original barn find has only 8,779 miles on her. The best part though is that it is apparently fitted with the “Bed in Car” option which eventually became a well-known Nash standard feature!

Bed in Car

Unfortunately, there is only one interior shot so you can’t even see the “Bed in Car” option.  Too bad, but the seller quotes the original advertising in the listing: “The convertible (bed) car is expected to be popular with fisherman, hunters, campers, and tourists who want sleeping comfort without the expense of hotel accommodations or the inconvenience of transporting bulky tents and camping equipment. The car also provides the means of visiting and staying in distant regions that have no hotel or tourist accommodations… Cushions have been designed so that that they can be moved forward and laid like Pullman sleeping-car sets to form a foundation for bedding. The foot of the improvised bed extends into the rear luggage compartment.”

The car is said to be in excellent running condition and the body is solid.  The Nash is powered by the 234.8 cu. in., 27.3 hp, 6 cylinder.  The original base purchase price was $770.  Since she is said to be running, this could be a fun project.  Just be sure to check the brakes before you go for a spin!

Cheers,
Robert

Maybe no pictures of the bed option in the ad however, they did have 9 pictures of the nearly useless 27 hp. engine. Some sellers…
