Ford’s Special Vehicle Team has produced some impressive performance vehicles over the years. The Mustang SVT Cobra was one of their first products, and they took the already fun Mustang and seriously stepped it up a notch. This 1997 Mustang SVT Cobra Convertible is a ready-to-drive 78k-mile survivor! The seller has enjoyed it, but it’s time to let someone new have fun with it, so they are offering it here as a BF Auction.

The Special Vehicle Team was tasked with increasing the Fox-body Mustang’s performance and looks. This 1997 model is based on the updated SN95 and features a handbuilt and tuned version of the 4.6-liter modular V8. Each SVT Cobra engine features a tag with the signatures of the two engine builders responsible for putting it together. It’s a small touch, but it shows the detail given to the construction of each car and just how special they are.

Here’s a look at the 4.6-liter V8 and the car’s engine bay. Besides some surface corrosion on a few nuts and bolts, the engine is nice and tidy. Ford rated the SVT Cobra’s engine at 305 horsepower and 300 ft-lbs of torque, which allowed a zero-to-60 time of around 6 seconds. The seller states that the engine starts and runs well. Power is sent through a T-45 5-speed transmission and a limited-slip differential. It’s well-sorted mechanically and is rolling on new tires.

This Mustang’s only real issue is some wear to the driver’s seat and the A/C system, which currently doesn’t blow cold. The leather upholstery is in good overall shape, but the driver’s seat bolster is worn. The odometer currently shows 78k miles, which is believed to be accurate. The car’s condition would seem to back that up. It’s equipped with the Mach 460 sound system, which should be powerful enough to hear your favorite tunes over the sounds of that hot V8.

There were 10,049 SVT Cobras built for model year 1997, of which just 3,088 were convertibles. The Cobra was offered only four color options. This one wears Crystal White paint with a black convertible top and saddle leather interior. According to Ford records, just four convertibles were built in this combination, and it’s hard to say how many of those were optioned with the rear spoiler.

This is a rare find that would be great to own. While some want the coupe for its lower curb weight and stiffer chassis for street use, it’s hard to deny that this convertible would be a blast! Drop the top, put the pedal to the metal, and enjoy the wind in your hair. If you want to be this Cobra’s next owner, bid below. And if you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below.

I just sold my ’99 Cobra SVT convertible with 90,000 miles, no rust, electric green with the tan top, last week. I had it on the market for months. I’ll be interested in what the winning bid will be on this one. GLWTA!

I’ve always wanted one of the 96-98 Cobra convertibles, specifically in triple black. Like, I’ve wanted one since they were new. Maybe someday…..

This looks like a pretty nice example.

Never cared much for these rims. Lovely cars, fast, comfy and a bargain for what your getting.
Alot of the really good stuff from the Ford 🏭 factory is included here, in this Cobra pkg.

Amazed how much of a deal these still are. By correcting the laughable undergearing from the factory and adding a set of stickier, wider rubber and a shifter with positive stops, these are decently quick and fun cars with a buttery-smooth engine capable of effortless, almost 7k rpm blasts. This looks to be a really well-kept example without the bevy of questionable mods that usually accompany these at this point because they’re so cheap.

Are these seats actual Recaro? They look very similar to the ones that came on my 2000 Audi S4.

Hard to believe these can be so cheap. Lovely automobile but Barnett I think had one going for a lot more for a lot but probably never driven and Concours quality and a car like this needs to be driven. It’s got me dreaming. Sell my Fox body quick and dip into the old IRA. Somebody stop me.

Whew, a more concise ad I doubt you’ll find. In such an about face from the ’88 LX, I absolutely loved my ’95.

Chris, I’m in Australia and just sold a 1994 Mustang GT with the old 302 Windsor pushrod V8, it also had a performance chip in the computer and boy could it get up and go, sold it for around 11 grand US last week, the biggest problem was the fact that I’m 79 years old and you don’t ‘get in’ those cars you have to ‘put them on’, I’m not overweight by any means just getting a bit stiff in the joints. Great ‘little’ car though, I had to trade it for something a bit bigger and more sedate, a 1952 Packard 200 sedan would you believe, floats down the road and I’m not in a hurry to get anywhere in particular so all’s good.
