With the massive success of the Jeep, IH Scout, and Ford Bronco, GMC needed an SUV to compete, but rather than building a rig of comparable size they decided to build something a bit larger. Part of that move was necessary since it was to be based on the K10 pickup, but it also made the Jimmy (Blazer when wearing a Chevrolet badge) stand out from the crowd. Being larger allowed for more interior and cargo space, plus the longer wheelbase allowed for a smoother ride. These rigs would go on to be very popular, the modern Suburban can trace its roots back to the Blazer and Jimmy. Unfortunately, most of these trucks were driven hard, so finding clean original examples is getting hard to do. The example seen here is well-optioned, wears original paint, and is ready to drive as is! It’s located in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and if you’d love to hit the road in this 4×4, you can bid on it below.
Being based on the K10 4×4 truck means you have all the off-road capabilities of a truck but with a cavernous interior with ample space to haul passengers, hunting equipment, or camping gear. You lose some of the utility of a truck bed, but the removable roof gives this Jimmy some of that back if needed. It’s more of a novel feature that is fun for nice weather cruising or trips into the wilderness than anything else, but it’s a cool feature. Being optioned as a Sierra Classic means this one came with all the bells and whistles, so it should be fun and comfortable on or off-road.
Taking a look at the interior, we find lovely houndstooth upholstery. It isn’t in perfect condition, but presents well and could be enjoyed as is. If you are so inclined, parts are readily available to fully restore this interior to like new condition. Given that the interior appears to be quite original, we would leave it as is and just carefully enjoy it. The seller notes that the carpets and windshield have both recently been replaced. A modern stereo system has also been installed and gives the new owner features like a backup camera and inputs for streaming devices.
Under the hood, you’ll find a good old 350 V8. It’s been treated to a full rebuild, as has the transmission. The VIN shows that this truck left the factory with a 4-barrel 350, so it seems likely that this is the original engine. It has been fitted with a few aftermarket bits, like Edelbrock valve covers and air cleaner. Correct factory-style parts are available and affordable, so it could be returned to its original look without much work. Of course, these parts work just fine and could be left where they are. Everything is said to work except for the air conditioning, the seller believes it will need a new A/C compressor, and the speedometer cable sticks when it is cold out.
The odometer is currently showing 38k miles, but the seller admits they aren’t sure what the true mileage is and have opted to list it as having 138k. All of the hard work has already been done to make this truck a driver again. It currently rides on new Excellent 31×10.5R15 LT All-terrain tires and has new brakes all around. We don’t come across Jimmys in this clean of condition that often, so if you have been on the hunt for one, be sure to cast your high bid. I’m not sure that hood is original paint (never seen that white hood with the brown stripes before), and it looks like the front fenders may be newer paint. Either way, it’s a good looking rig. I love those seats.
I have never seen a white hood on one of these vehicles either? It actually looks odd and was done without any thought be given to how it might look afterwards…. whether it’s factory or aftermarket?
I can say with confidence that the front fenders have been repainted, whether the seller realizes it or not?
It’s probably a good truck, and hopefully the new owner will repaint the hood ASAP.

yup thats factory. seen a few like this in my day. not many though.
paint on these was not the best in terms of prep and sealant. ive owned couple of these with the original paint that was fading exactly like this one. that being said its pretty cool to see one in this original shape, i cant remember the last time i saw one driving around looking this good. Cudos for the caretakers who obviously spared this Jimmy
I had a ’78 that was the exact same color with a white hood.
You’re in luck! Find a 1989 Chevrolet K5 Blazer brochure and you will get to see this exact truck as a Chevy. Full factory offering.
Is that a fact? Are the stripes on the hood factory as well? None of the shades of brown on the stripes match the brown paint. I’m not complaining, just curious if the stripes are factory as well. It does look very period correct for the early 80’s. I could see Ponch and John rocking a blazer (or jimmy) with this appearance package.

I had a 1980 Blazer version, Silverado. I was the 2nd owner in 1981. Had 28,000 miles when I bought it, but by 33,000 it wouldnt run right. Turned out to be a “soft cam”, as I found out that there was a problem with the steel used (“jap steel”) and the lobes wore down quickly. Replaced cam and chain etc. and drove it for 60,000 + more miles. Loved this body style and front end. Gas hog, though. The transfer case shifter wss not in a console, just a rubber boot on tne floor. If you didnt keep white grease on the hood hinges and springs that crease would be there within 3 years or less. JC Whitney and others offered a special hinge support, that was longer on the hood side to spread the weight and help prevent it. This one makes me want it but figure 10mpg and 12-14 on the highway.
“The lobes wore down quickly” That would be an understatement, I worked in a GM dealer in the early 80s. New chevrolets came in on the transport, with 4 miles on the odometer, popping through the carburetor, cam lobes were gone, and the bottom of the lifters were concave lol. I made a killing for a few years, replacing cams and lifters in those indestructible small blocks lol
This could well be original paint on the hood. This same treatment was done on several base colors. I was a body & paint guy in the early ’80s and saw and worked on a lot of them. Even though the paint was lacquer it took an extra day to do a full repaint, because of the extra masking.
Looks very period correct! Would be a fun driver.
Correcting any of its flaws would be half the fun.

I remember seeing some GMC Squarebodys of that era with the stripes on the hood like that; even if that isn’t original, it’s certainly period correct, just like the rest of this Jimmy. And at 138K this can be driven and enjoyed. I can see the bidding ending at $30K.
I remember those hood stripes from this era, but they were in blue-tones on a blue/white truck. Great looking Jimmy and love the houndstooth seats.
Does this have the same front end as the 1978 model?
It’s hard to tell with the paint scheme.
The front end is different. The headlights (and bezels) are square instead of round, and the leading edge of the hood has a raised portion along the front, over the grille.
1980 was a 1 year only style front end with that style if head lights. I has a 1980 K5 Blazer that was identical.
Most rusted away
The stripes on the hood are indeed original to these trucks, dad had a 79 blazer, white with the same exact ones

Seems like most of the hoods i see on these square bodies have a buckle in them. Guy up the road from me has last time I counted 13 square bodies of mixed configs. It always gives me a smile when i see them. Nice rig though.
The 4×4 center floor shift looks like its missing a box housing , or was 4×4 added to this rig , just cut a hole in the carpet ?

Original paint? How many shades of brown do you see? The carpet don’t fit well at all. And the front of the hood has rust bubbling coming through.
C’mon new carpet and it looks like a nice molded kit. Patina also shows nice aging. This looks like a nice original rig.
Me thinks u r too harsh on the brown mettalic paint job. I had a 78 c-10 ,2 wd short bed in the same color with tan (buckskin?) side panels. Bought it new, and the mettalic flakes in the paint looked like red to gold to my untrained eye which would let the color change from burgundy to gold depending on the light and shadows. This root beer mettalic would be called firemist on Cadillacs. The angular psnels on the “square bodies” would reflect the light differently, so I can believe this is ORIGINAL paint, or repainted entirely from the pics.
Now my 78 looked great for 3 years, so I bought the 80 Blazer in 81. The 78 c-10 showed rust from under the paint at 3 yrs, even though I had Rusty Jones, well it had a jones for rust but my 80 Blazer went 10 yrs with me and no major rust issues. Both parked outside in Florida. I was told the rust was duebto bad steel from Japan with old Rusty helping it along. The c-10 with.a 305 -2brl, ran great though and decent mileage. See my other post in my 80.Blazer soft cam 350 4brl. That and the rusty root beer truck turned me off of Chevy /GMC for many years.
Any close up pics of the lower part of the truck? Any rust or bubbling?
Nice rig and low reserve I wish I was in a position to bid higher it doesn’t appear to have the GM body cancer that took a lot of trucks from these years down.
