For 1971, the Mustang underwent a significant redesign. The new, larger Pony car was more comfortable and offered more options than ever. This example is a Mach 1 with the 351C V8. The seller found it in a field and treated it to a complete restoration. It’s now in beautiful condition inside and out, but the time has come to let someone new enjoy it. They want to see it go to a good home, so they are offering it here as a Barn Finds Auction!
The seller had one of our professional photographers come to take pictures of it; as you can see, it looks great! According to the trim tag, this Mach 1 was originally painted Wimbledon White. It’s now wearing a coat of bright white paint with black accents. It presents well, though, and the black accents go great with the Mach 1’s features.
When the interior was redone, it received custom seat upholstery. These seats feature larger bolsters and are likely more comfortable. The original seats would have also been multi-colored, so the rear seats could be original. The car also received a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a nice upgrade, but it doesn’t match the faux wood on the dash or door panels. Finding a wood steering wheel that matches perfectly could be a challenge, so we would leave it and just enjoy the car as is.
Power is provided by a 351 cui Cleveland V8. In this case, it’s the H-Code 2V with 240 horsepower and 350 foot pounds of torque. It’s said to be in good running order, but the factory A/C system has been removed. While having working A/C would make this a more comfortable summer driver, it would still be fun without it.
This is a great-looking machine! The ’71 Sportroof design just works in this color combination. The engine bay and interior could use some tidying but are usable as is. The 351 V8 is a solid engine and can be upgraded easily for more power. We would love to see photos of it when it was found in the field, but that was back in 2001. The seller states that it’s lived in California since new and is free of any rust concerns. So, if you’d love to make it yours, bid below and leave any questions in the comment section.

No matter how nice, it will always be burdened by the Salvage title.
Don’t think “Salvage” think “Salvation!” After all these years, no surprises. I’d lose the red mats, clean up the engine bay and wind out that Cleveland. Only you and the DMV knows it’s a salvation.
Love white with black Mustangs, especially the 69 Boss 302. Scratching my head at “treated it to a complete restoration” though.
Salvage title not a big deal in colorado. Great color combo.
Not a fan of the blacked out Magnum 500 rims. Not really a fan of the 71-73 anyway, but the black rims and front bumper just don’t look right.
Just to clarify, the front bumper on a white 1971 mach 1 should be either chrome or white, not black. The hood and the tail light panel should be blacked out. These are minor things but in my opinion make a big difference in appearance, it just doesn’t look right like this.
The black door edge guards also don’t help it’s appearance.
The seller says that the car has a C4 transmission. The door data sticker says that the car has an FMX transmission. Perhaps the seller can clarify which transmission the car actually has.
I wasn’t aware that any of the “Cleveland” 351s came equipped with a 2 bbl carb. I learned something today. I’m an old guy, born in 1953, so no interest in any Mustang after the 1970 model year.
The factory barrel engine also had different cylinder heads. Pretty much a different animal.
Weather you like the 71 to 73 Mustang Mach 1, or not, This blast from the past (original Eleanor from 1974 film’Gone in 60 seconds) will eventually surpass a lot of other top rated 60 and 70 vehicles, Like everything else, it’s just a matter of time.
Good Morning; Original tranny was fmx but was shot , changed to rebuilt c4 , better and much lighter. Also 351c came with 2 bbl from factory. Previous owner changed to 4 bbl which I had rebuilt.
Those front floor mats should be black. The red color overpowers the total look of the interior.
I’ve got a red and black 71 mach 1 with a 351 clev and a c-4 auto with duel flowmaster pipes, 650 duel line double pumper carb, 1/4 crane cam and a few other goodies, and i know people like 68 thru 70 stangs, but that 2 tone pile of rust ha-ha will sure tote the mail.
The interior is ‘restored’??? The dashboard shows all of its fifty years of accumulated rust, scuffs, and corrosion quite well. Badly repainted except for all the oversights and ignored areas, but by no means ‘restored’.
And let’s not overlook the engine. That certainly hasn’t been restored. It looks like it’s never been cleaned since new.

Explaining the salvage title would help any potential buyer to understand the history of the vehicle.
What’s with the air cleaner decals? The Sports Sprint one doesn’t even belong on a 71, or a V8 for that matter, and the other one claims ram air on a car that doesn’t have functional ram air and apparently never did or it would be equipped with twist lock style hood pins.
My goodness we’ve got a mean spirited bunch this w/e on this one. Cathouse asked about the tranny discrepancy & Mike about the engine. The author answered nicely. Black bumper, steering wheel wood not matching, headlight out….are all small issues. The car is no Mecum or JB special granted but its not advertised as such. The seller rescued it & did SOME work not all work. That is never claimed. Take it for its face value. Someone could end up with a great deal here. Would have been nice to see some frame shots.✌

When purchasing the car was told of the salvage title due to acid spilled over the exterior . Wasn’t sure if I believed that but over the course of 2 years have had ample time [and my mechanic] to examine car for any noticeable wrecked areas and we found none. Frame is straight, car tracks true without pulling in either direction, etc.
Being a Pantera freak, have any of you heard of heart transplants?
This car provides the perfect Cleveland engine block for anything that a person would care to do to enhance the horse power from a 72 de Tamaso 265 hp to the 71 street cat Pantera 335 hp little kitty.
I know, I’m nuts. But, give it a thought.
