Basic Needs: 1973 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus
This 1973 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus is a rust-free survivor that is looking for a new home. It needs some cosmetic work and basic mechanical maintenance, and it would then be a pretty nice car to own and drive. Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, you will find the Plymouth listed for sale here on eBay. The owner has set the opening bid at $5,000 in a No Reserve auction. Originally introduced in 1965, the Sebring remained in production across three generations, with production ending in 1974. This car is from that final generation and must have been an attractive car when new. It is finished in Forest Green, with a matching dark green vinyl top. The top has definitely seen better days, but even though it is now pretty badly shredded, it appears that rust has not managed to get a foot-hold under the vinyl. The owner says that the Plymouth is rust-free, and there certainly isn’t any visible on the car. It looks like a fresh coat of Forest Green and a new vinyl top would have the car looking really good again.
In general terms, the interior of the Plymouth looks quite tidy, and it certainly would be serviceable as it is. It appears that the bottoms of both front seats have received new covers at some point, and while the color is correct, the pattern and buttoning isn’t. Still, this is one of the few faults that is visible inside the car, and it’s nothing that couldn’t be fixed with a new set of covers. The rest of the trim that is visible looks like it is in really good condition, which means that the new owner isn’t going to face much work inside the car.
Hiding under the hood of the Plymouth is a 318ci V8 engine, which is backed by a TorqueFlite transmission. The car hasn’t seen any use in the past 5-years, but the engine has undergone a rebuild at some point. The car is said to start, run, and drive nicely with a jump box, but will need a fresh battery and all of the usual maintenance that you would expect after 5-years of inactivity. I think it’s fair to expect that a full flush of the fuel system will be on the agenda, plus other basic maintenance work. It doesn’t sound like it’s going to cost a lot of money, but could potentially provide the next owner with a few satisfying hours of tinkering in their home workshop.
As project vehicles go, they don’t really seem to come more straightforward than this 1973 Satellite Sebring Plus. It is a clean car that could be made to really sparkle with minimal outlay. The color combination is very attractive, and with good examples now selling for around the $13,000 mark, this one has the potential to be a very affordable project car.

I always thought that styling wise this body was a let down from the 71-72. The halo vinyl top looks like a too small cap perched on an oversized head; however, as a Road Runner, I came to appreciate it. Those wheel covers, though (IMO) were one of the UGLIESTdesigned ever! :-)
Everything seemed green back then including the grass. I had multiple 318 mopars like this and always liked that motor.Very dependable and barely enough power.
I agree on the wheels. A nice set of ralley wheels or magnum 500s would spruce the old girl up. 5000 grand seems like a lot of money in my opinion.
Almost anything green gets me excited. Rather than replace the top I’d color-match the paint to what the vinyl was supposed to look like.
I had a 74 back in high school and LOVED that car. Had the Roadrunner hood, rally wheels, hood pins, air shocks, and Plymouth in a white decal across the rear quarters. That 318 took a beating and I had a good relationship with the local junk yard guys from repeatedly buying used $5 tires to peel off every time I left a stop

Nice looking car overall. I especially like the front end treatment. Rust free with a re-built engine and a fairly nice interior. It needs some cosmetic help but a nice driver until those needs get addressed. I think you wouldn’t want to pay too much for it, though. While I agree the wheel covers are somewhat bizarre, they’d be quite the conversation starter at your local cruise. Myself, I’d just keep ’em.
Not well equipped either…no A/C….90K miles…Magnum 500 wheels would really help the look! But, will be very lucky to bring $5K on this one….doubt if many people are hunting for a car like this. I owned several well-equipped Sebrings’s in this era….they were pretty nice daily drivers too..
I really like it, but my vision of it would be torque thrusts wheels or the Magnum 500’s, gotta be black wheels here no chrome stuff, do away with the vinyl top altogether, and of course a longer stroke small block mopar, 360 cubes or wanna those modern stroker versions. Don’t know what they get those up to anymore, 408?
I like this Plymouth a bit more than that Charger posted today it just needs a little direction. Sweet.

Always like this body style, but could never manage to pick one up – I do remember going to look at a used Satellite Sundance edition once at a used car lot – I should have gabbed that one !
Like others have stated, this body style was a regression looks wise ,from the 71/72 but I still like it. I have saved a pic of an orange roadrunner that looks great so it all depends on what one does with wheels (mag. 500?)and body color, and when you look at a 73/74 Charger no comparison , those things got ridiculous, in length.
I had a 73 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus 318 ci blue w/ white interior rally wheels, loved that car, bought it new in 73, had it for 7 years, put 125,000 miles on it never burned a drop of oil, I lived in the northeast, winters were not kind to mopar steel, front and rear fenders were starting to rust , it was a great car while I owned it
