Barbados Yellow Project: 1990 Honda CRX Si

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Among Honda models made in the 1990s, one of the rarest specs you can get is the CRX or Prelude clad in Barbados Yellow paint. This is the car you saw in the showroom in 1989 or splashed across the centerpiece of the model brochure. It was a walking advertisement for Honda, promoting the virtues of a sharp-handling front-wheel-drive car along with a willing engine and buttery-smooth gearbox. Funny thing is, there’s also a curse associated with this paint scheme; more on that later. Find the CRX in desirable Si trim listed here on eBay with an opening bid of $6,500 and no action yet.

The CRX is the preferred spec with Si trim that got you a more powerful four-cylinder engine. In addition, 1990 was the first year the CRX got rear disc brakes and the only year in which four-wheel discs were offered in combination with the Barbados Yellow paint. This Si also wears its correct factory wheels, factory mudflaps (exceedingly hard to find), and no obvious alterations to the bodywork (meaning, no cheesy body kits). Amazingly, this CRX has no rust which is incredibly rare to find considering the fenders began rotting out after just a season or two of winter driving.

The interior sports no obvious modifications, with the classic cloth bucket seats still presenting well. These Honda seats came from the factory with incredible bolstering; no need to upgrade to Recaros with seats like these. In fact, if you find a decent set in the junkyard, grab them: you’ll make your money back and then some without issue. The seller reports that the air conditioning equipment is present but not working. The CRX obviously needs to be cleaned inside and out and would benefit from a proper paint correction to bring back that gorgeous paint job. Fortunately, it doesn’t look too far gone that a paint revival is out of the question.

Engine-wise, the CRX does not run. The seller calls this rare Si a “barn find” that was put away once the car developed a misfire. Hopefully, the misfire isn’t due to a bad timing belt or another major issue that would need to be resolved before attempting to register the car for road use. The CRX does sport an aftermarket cold air intake, which provides some context as to how the car was used before being parked. The curse of the Barbados Yellow paint code has to do with owners of these cars either losing a vehicle to tragedy or finding endless maintenance issues to resolve – hopefully, this project-grade CRX doesn’t become a statistic.

Damn these were fun cars to drive. I wonder how hard it is to get some of the trim parts for these now.

Probably not too difficult, since a lot of Civic parts would bolt right in for some pieces.

The engine is not an issue… We all know a B16A or B18 was going to be replacing that lump anyway. Or a K series if you want it to spin in the same direction as the rest of the free world.

We had a couple of CRX si’s on the rental fleet (with manual trans) including 1 in Bahamas Yellow. One night, the owners 17 year old son decided he wanted a fancy ride, went down to the office and helped himself to the yellow car. Car ended up in a ditch totalled. So, the yellow jinx fits.

No way. Not in this condition. Not even for an Si in the curse color. That’s way too high. This is like a $3500 car, tops.
