Barn Stored Alfas: Alfa Romeo Project Package
The sight of a pair of late fifties Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spiders fresh from a barn and up for sale would warm the hearts of Alfisti everywhere and that is what we have on Craigslist in Benton Township, Michigan for $45,000.
In their day, the Giulietta Spider was – and still is – a good looking sports car. Alfa gave their drivers luxuries such as wind up windows, fully synchronized transmissions and dual overhead cam engines that their mainly British competitors did not. Styling wise, the Giulietta Spider is very understated with mostly smooth, straight body lines and a grille design in keeping with Alfa history.
The seller has two cars: one is a 1957 which he claims to be “rock solid” and a 1958 that is “not so solid.” Both cars are red, but one of them looks like it was born with white paint, which if they are to be restored shouldn’t be an issue. One car is photographed in a barn, complete with straw on the floor and barn dust on the body. That’s the one with the white paint showing in the engine bay and under failing paint on the exterior.
The other car is shown after being pulled out of a shed and this may be the not-so-solid one. We don’t have any photos of the rocker panels, but some shots look as though there is some rot there and on the door bottoms. There is a removable hardtop sitting on the car in one shot, but it looks like it belongs to an MGB and may have been on the car to give the interior some protection.
Both cars have their drive trains in place and they should be the 1290 cc dual overhead cam four cylinder engine backed up with a four speed transmission sending drive to the rear wheels. Power output was less than 70 horsepower, but top speed wasn’t what these cars were about. They were great handling and fun to drive sports cars with some creature comforts to go along with it.
It may be possible to get two complete restored cars out of this package. It won’t be the easiest job, but it could be very rewarding. The Hagerty Valuation Tool places a value of just over $87,000 for a number 2 or “Excellent” example. “Fair” – number 4 – value is just under $35,000. Can you see yourself living la dolce vita in a freshly restored Alfa?

nice. Looks like the seller has a variety of British cars as well. Makes one wonder how he came to have these two fine Italian sports cars.
Background full of Triumphs.
yup,my cars, yes rock solid comparatively speaking but not without some rust, two holes golf ball size, one in the trunk corner at wheel well one on drivers floor. floor will hold my weight. But they are straight. Even the outside car is not total toast, just not as good as the 57. Neither run anymore the outside car was mt daily driver alfa. I have owned these for close to 30 years. Not sure how they got on barn cars but hopefully no real negative remarks. I restored one nut and bolt 20 years ago, God it was a charmer…as well as others,Giuliettas are the little jewels they claim to be, now I am to old….to stiff, to blind.to tired….Ciao
interested I am fred
He’s local to me and these have been for sale off and on craigslist for years… many people have inquired and tried to buy them over the years and here they are still “for sale”…
….16 months + or – actually but I have owned them for appx 30 years,so whats the rush, all I get are flippers, thats what Barn cars is all about. Had I been a flipper they would have disappeared years ago. and I didn’t post them or these here, some one else did without mu knowlege, I know better. Why take unasked for abuse,I only offer locally but open to any and all. I have sold off some of my alfas, and my TVR etc, I rarely get over the loss…like losing a child… :-) When I do sell I invariably make a alfisti friend. Sold my 58 veloce to a prince of a guy and it is living in Az spectacularly restored as it it so richly deserved. Kieth Martin did a nice write up on it at the time it was listed for sale in its unrestored state
Great find! Some people are lucky and some people like me have to look a lifetime to find what they are truly looking for!
Bravo – Ciao for being the care taker of the breed….they wouldn’t have survived most likely….especially with a flipper – I know a few and they are getting close to eating metal with a little ketchup !
