Cozy Caddy: 1977 Cadillac Seville Opera Coupe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Opera Coupe was a customized Cadillac Seville produced by the Grandeur Motor Car Co. of Pompano Beach, Florida. It’s estimated that about 600 copies of the 2-door “luxury shorty” were built and sold, with a little more than 100 from the 1977 year alone (per the seller). This example seems rather nice, but the seller only offers three photos (and none of the passenger compartment or engine bay).

When Cadillac brought out the Seville in 1976, it was a smaller product than most Cadillac buyers were accustomed to. But the times called for more fuel-efficient automobiles, so these Caddys used a 350 cubic inch V8 (supplied by Oldsmobile). The Grandeur Opera Coupe was a neo-classic machine with fake spare tire covers on the front fenders. We assume these custom jobs were created by chopping out the middle of the car to seat only 2 or 3 passengers. The length of the front clip was extended as well.

The seller says little about this oddity beyond production estimates, mileage (61,000), and that the car runs well. The asking price is $10,000, but it sounds like the seller might take $8,000 and change. Located in Porterville, California, this shrunken Caddy is available here on Facebook Marketplace. Thanks for the tipperoo, Mitchell G.!

They made six HUNDRED of these?!? That many people wanted a Seville with a uselessly long hood and the cab space of a contemporary Japanese minitruck?

Bet this ends with big wire wheels in Houston for $25k or somewhere in Europe where many are now. Had one years ago. Too much attention, conversations at gas stations, and thumbs up lol.

Looks like something from the movie escape from New York when that Cadillac is cruising with the Chandeliers on the front fenders so the Duke probably wants his car back

OTOH, the car’s presence would create a viewing area around it where people would wish they were blind instead of actually seeing this.

I believe on the Chevy with the 409, one of the options was 409 hp, so one would have a 409, 409!

I was in service management for a Cadillac dealership at that time. We ordered ONE of these for a customer and that’s all. They were horribly built. The A-pillars and windshield shook on bumps, the quarter panels did the same when the doors were closed and the list went on. Our dealer tried to talk the buyer out of taking it because he knew the car would live in our service department and possibly damage the reputations of both Cadillac and our company but he still bought it.

I’m kind of surprised to hear that GM would allow something this custom to be sold through the dealership.

Exactly for those reasons that you mention.

Would NOT buy anything from a individual who curbs and squishes a front tire like this owner does.

I’m sure ya’ll are waiting with baited breath for my opinion. 🙄😆
I am not a fan of these mainly for the disproportions of the car. The 1976 Seville, although not technically a land yacht was a gorgeous car.
The opera coupe could have been a decent custom, but maybe it was the times. The 70s were not exactly fashion forward.
The Duke, Superfly, and all the other pimps wouldn’t touch this. At least it’s a decent color. Many times, as garish as this car is, the color is equally garish making it a double nightmare.

You either like these Cadillacs or you don’t. I love all Cadillacs especially 76 Thur 79 Seville’s . the Opera coup is a shortened version of the Seville . You have to remember neo classics were an in thing back in 76 and I’ve seen these cars up close and they were gorgeous to me. I just couldn’t afford one.

For the Cadillac Opera coup to receive so much negativity from so many I’d say interesting. There are certain facts though. One is this car is the only neo classic style car that was built by one of the big three. Two it’s not a kit car it’s all GM. Three all that were produced sold and some to some very prominent people.Andy Gibbs for one. Taste in cars are personal and beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. So l salute the only all American neo classic.
