Cheap Muscle Car Project? 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Update 1/27/20 – After getting bid up to $6,600 this Chevelle is back up to auction here on eBay. How high will it go this time around?

From 1/27/20 – Up for sale is a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu that might need some work, but can be had currently for an amazing price. Only 8 bidders have put the price up to an affordable $2,800, but the reserve has not yet been met. No mileage is listed, but there is a VIN in the listing and the title is said to be clean. This Malibu is nowhere near its names geographical location. It is located in Broadwater, Nebraska. You can view more on eBay.

Under the hood is a 350 cubic-inch V8 that is connected to a 3-speed automatic transmission. Sadly, it has not been brought to life a number of years and there is no word on if it will turn. Almost to add insult to injury, instead of the classic ran when parked, the seller claims that the “motor was strong when last run.” The single photo of the engine does show that it looks like it has potential. It certainly has more parts on it than many other cars that get put up for sale, so at least you are getting more for your money from the start.

A Hurst shifter resides on the transmission tunnel in the center of the bucket seats. The one photo of the interior is helpful. The red carpeting is certainly going back to different days of automotive design and consumer taste. Then again, how do we know consumers wouldn’t buy red interiors if there isn’t even an option anymore? That is for another discussion. Anyway, as you can tell, it is dirty and some wiring has been performed but overall, it is manageable and would be comfortable to ride in if you get the car running and want to drive it home.

The minor issues listed by the seller are the rear quarter panels needing replacement, the surface rust on parts of the body and doors, and the front suspension is in need of unspecified work. The trunk might also need new metal as well. Otherwise, it seems like an inexpensive, strong project car that can provide a good time quite quickly.

The overall condition of this Chevelle doesn’t seem to be too bad. It does have some rust but it doesn’t look terminal. The interior isn’t bad, either. No word on if the engine/trans is original but that shouldn’t be too hard to figure out I would think. It’s bid up to $5,600 already so I’d bet this solid project isn’t going to be cheap with 3 full days of bidding left to go.

Neither a 350 engine, nor a three speed automatic were available in 1966.

Carpet looks like it was pulled up from someone’s basement rec room back in ’74. Def not factory. Woulda been better off with a $125 JCWhitney kit. Quarters need done, but all in all, looks like it can be saved. Always liked the ’66…..

The drifters and touring car crowds are probably looking up red carpet as we speak and wondering who the heck Mr. Whitney is. LOL
Hopefully today the only red carpet for sale on these interwebs is thick pile shag … ya know … so they get the “authentic” experience with the full “tackyness” factor. Remember when flat black and velocity stacks were cool? Yeah, me too … I can still remember this morning. Mr. Bob, you definitely get my GREATEST quote of the day award, with “Woulda been better off with a $125 JCWhitney kit” I definitely have 3 buddies I’ll have to share that with before days end. I literally LOL’d, so Thanks for that!!

JC Whitney, where you could get a kit to put a four-headlight conversion on your 1957 Chevy! Tons of parts to replace originals and tons more Detroit never offered, for good reason. Water injectors, vapor injectors, carburetor flow-disrupters, horns that played 99 different melodies, lighted hula dancer for the dashboard, if it could be attached to a car they sold it.

I wonder if anyone laments the loss of the days of finding these, letting the prospect of cash in hand marinate for a few days, a little thrill of the stalk, the friendly banter, the old car stories, the incredibly diverse, interesting, and unique folks, that opposing teams sorta of strange bond, and then rolling one of these babies on the rollback for about 3k to do whatever it is you personally like to do with them after that. Seems like I kinda do huh? As the kid who had 3 junked Commodore 64’s running to make horrid monochrome flowers and print them out on the dot-matrix so I could stick ’em on the cool “McIntosh” kids lockers just to take that checkered flag, you’d think I’d have embraced tech a bit more, but for me, like a planishing hammer, mini feelers, or the Mighty Worm, it’s specific tools that are great at one thing and useless to me for anything else. Of course, I still use my mobile like it’s hooked to a wall where it should be and have read all the ways that corporate mega store “warranties” are 99% never gonna help or do anything for ya no matter how many dotted T’s and crossed I’s you have ;) So kids, probably go ahead and don’t listen to me, but as always though, do have a wonderful day!!

Too bad it has Camaro buckets, unfortunately they are not as comfortable as Chevelle seats. Body not too bad shape. Doable.

Looks like a good project for someone, turn it into a 4 speed with a nice paint job and have fun.

These made great dirt track race cars back in the 70’s! The Chevelles of the 60’s were great, simple, easy to hop-up cars. Light enough to make quick and fast, wide and low enough to make canyon carvers. This one’s a little pricey for what’s there…

It’s still as much a rust bucket as last month and seller is looking for ten large I suspect.

Looks like it sold for $6,800. Now let’s see if the seller relists it…
