Cheap One-Year-Only Wagon: 1977 Ford LTD II Squire
Looking back to 1977, it’s hard to fathom that Ford’s new LTD II was considered an intermediate-size offering. Just as a massive downsizing program was taking effect at General Motors, Ford introduced their LTD II in 1977, with the sedan measuring nearly 220 inches in length. By comparison, the restyled and downsized ’77 Chevrolet Caprice was still considered a full-size car, but it was only just a shade past 212 inches long. The largest Ford to wear the LTD II badge was the station wagon, coming in at 223.1″, so if you’ve been looking for a very large intermediate wagon, this 1977 LTD II should have you covered.
The LTD II was short-lived in the Ford lineup, with the coupes and sedans only in production over three model years. However, the wagon’s duration was even less, as it was discontinued at the end of the ’77 run, making it a one-year-only offering. While the seller of this one doesn’t offer much in the way of its past, he does tell us the body remains super-straight and is 99% rust-free. The paint and woody panels are fading, but the seller calls this a perfect patina, so it’ll be up to the taste buds of the future owner to decide whether or not to mess with the exterior. A more pertinent task for the buyer will be a visit to the tire store of their choice, as one is down completely and the others aren’t looking entirely roadworthy.
The plaid seats are a great throwback from the seventies, but there are a couple of tears on the driver’s area fabric and some wheel covers are making it hard to evaluate the other side. No photos from the rear section of the interior are provided, but the seller says it’s got nine-passenger occupancy, so there must be a third unit back there. If more luggage space is needed, no problem, as a roof rack can also be found on top, in addition to that cool air deflector.
A 400 V8 is providing power, the largest displacement you could get under the hood here, which is stated to be running awesome and has 106k miles of use. Probably the most appealing feature about this 1977 Ford LTD II station wagon is its price, which is listed as $1,450, so I’m guessing this one will probably find its way into a wagon-lover’s heart fairly quickly. If that’s you, this woody station wagon is being offered by Car Freak Classics in Kalispell, Montana, and can be found here on Craigslist. I’m finding the price here reasonable for what you’re getting, but what are your thoughts?

Very likable. Interior looks surprisingly good (I hope it has the rear-facing pop up seat in the back) As for the body – there’s plenty of woody-grain decal kits out there. At this price, I’d go for it.
This could make a seriously fun 4×4 conversion and tail gate machine!

I think Ford didn’t even try to make the mandatory 5mph numbers look good.
Digging those plaid seats! Although when this car was new I wouldn’t look without laughing. Hounds Tooth is another one better today
The best part of this wagon is the plaid upholstery.

It probably wouldn’t take that much to make this into a good driver car. If you want to restore, go for it and waste a pile of money. OTHERWISE, being a Ford it’s not hard to work with mechanical and parts are no sweat, maybe even your local Autozone?
I agree, but even a cheap rattle-can spray and decals would make a world of difference.
My neighbor had one of these, I was long moved out but would see it sitting in his driveway when I visited my parents. Always thought it would make a killer hunting /camping rig. Later found out my brother bought it to haul his camper around
Lordy, another Ford wagon to tempt me, lol, I’d actually buy the Edsel listed further up. It has chacter, this, even tho it’s an “intermediate”, is just a land barge, and the tarten seats? Nope.
I’m a Ford man and a wagon tragic, I prefer the Edsel by a long shot.
Love those seats. I’m in agreement with a lot of the comments here. Do what you can to get it road worthy and drive it. The decals yes, they look tatty. replace them. Clear coat over the patina and your in business.
Its not really a one year car ; its still Fords Torino platform from the cowl back – an Elite front clip would bolt right on. Just like the only Cougar wagon, still a Torino

We had a few of these ’75-’77 wagons, both Ford and Mercury, roll through the driveway when Dad worked at the Ford dealer. He’d get a demonstrator and two months later it’d sell because someone wanted that color and trim combo and on to the next one. They were decent cars, a bit bargelike with a hood you could sleep on and bumpers you could sit on. This one could be a fun knockabout car.
