Chop Top Wagon: 1979 AMC Pacer
If you’ve seen one 1979 AMC Pacer wagon convertible you’ve seen them all. No, really, are there any others? This chop-top music video car can be found here on eBay in Peroria, Arizona with an unmet opening bid price of $1,455 and no reserve after that.
Poor little Pacer. This is apparently what it looked like prior to being subjected, I mean, being the subject of a music video where it was liberated from its top. There almost couldn’t be any less information given in the eBay listing so we don’t know much about it other than now it doesn’t have a top. It does have new brakes and it runs good, according to the seller.
Rust is visible and with almost no information about the car in the listing, we don’t know if it’s an Arizona car but I’m guessing not given the rust. They do say that it has an air suspension, I’m assuming that helped in hauling William Joseph and Simply Three seen here in a YouTube video filmed in this car. Towards the end, you’ll see the top go flying. Kids, do not try this at home…
Like the small description, the photos are few and far between, and small. These last three photos were enlarged a bit because they were basically thumbnail images, but you all know what a Pacer wagon looks like! I don’t know what to say about this one, it’s interesting as heck but with that chopped-off top I can’t think of a use for it. Would you have a use for this roofless Pacer wagon?

No.
( I too added to your thumbs up count : )
for those not bothering to watch the video, it’s hilariously good!
And what a great marketing campaign, great way to promote your product.
And yes there was this car … ironically not necessarily the center of the vid but it has managed to get people to check out their musical adaptation of a classic! Selling this poor old Pacer? pure genius, who’s going to buy it … but how many have watch the vid because of it?
Well done William Joseph & Simply Three !!!
I say to the perpetrator of this atrocity, “Have you no sense of dignity, sir?”
I live about 30 miles north from where this was made. I was still never a fan of these, but taste is so subjective that I would never cut anyone else down for liking them. That being said, I can’t think of a better use for this car. If anyone out there likes these, please don’t be offended by my statement. You might think my bizarre obsession with hearses is bizarre.
Kill it with fire.
The Ugly is Strong in this one ):
Roofless sounds a lot like WORTHLESS.
It was a $1500 car **BEFORE** they hacked the roof off. Now it’s scrap metal or, at best, a parts car. No car cut up like that is worth four figures.
You would be the only one at a car show ))
You didn’t finish your sentence Fred.
You would be the only one at a car show…that got denied entry.
…or everyone else left when you got there? ;)
Thats cause everybody else fled.
In the 1st pic, you can clearly see what a knucklehead looks like. I’d expect this to be in N.Wis. where the cutting torch reigns supreme. I think I’m gonna puke,,,
He doesn’t care about us car guys…he’s going for the chicks, obviously.
The video is hilarious. Well done gents!
I agree Rex! Most of you are looking at this auction all wrong. The value is not for the chopped top Pacer, the value is for a headliner in a rock video. It’s no Joplin MB for sure. But maybe in a couple years this band could be selling out stadium events. Stranger things have happened.
Well, that’s depressing. Poor little Pacer.
Hey Howard…if you’re going to spew..spew into this. Party on
He took a $500 car, cut it’s roof off and is now asking $1,500.
You know the saying “measure twice, cut once”?
Well, this guy didn’t.
fish tank to fish bowl
Hey, Rex, the guy may be going for the chicks, but he’s already laid an egg. The guy must be sick to take a perfectly good little car and cut it’s head off like that. Maybe he was trying to convert it into a dune buddy. Whatever, he definitely laid that egg, and that baby won’t “fry.”
That car now has the torsional rigidity of a Kleenex box.
From crap to scrap. Good move.
You would think an ugly car couldn’t be made uglier! But, it can happen! Should be put in a barn, and left there.
Sometimes people can’t see the forest for the trees … read my first post/response … simply genius!!!
The video is Hilarious! It could be made into a hearse? Pacers are ok cars.
Having seen the Top Gear episode where the lads take their open-top minivan through a car wash and set the vehicle on fire there is no need to see the YouTube version.
Ike, watch this vid then tell me it was a waste of time, I say clever!!
“Before” pics were taken at Goldenrod Garage in Freeport, Maine! They had it for sale at some point. Not sure its the same car but could be. Appears to have been 2 toned before with whitewall tires and now is monotone with blackwall tires. Tires can be changed but the paint? Not so easy, while leaving the rust holes! The only thing dumber than buying a rusty Maine car and shipping it to AZ: butchering it like he did! Just stupid all around.
Does that car have a unibody I wonder how long before it folds
Anyone else notice the resemblance to a kitty litter shovel?
The video is great! Yes the car is unibody. So I imagine that the effort in opening and closing the doors is directly proportional to how many bumps the car has taken. A speed bump at 20mph would render the doors shut for ever.
Having moved a grand piano. The piano lift was way too easy for four guys.
Around here in the late 70’s there were several AMC “conversions” mostly gremlins done like this. Rusted out, poor running, piles of crap, that you could pick up for $50-$100. Take the sawsall to them and you have a “fishin’ car or a explorin’ car” and yes uni-body, most people did the demo derby thing and welded or bolted a piece of steel across the doors to prevent them being opened because they would fold up. Reminded my dad of what he used to do in the 30’s,to old Fords and Chevys to use as “fish cars” or tractors. Believed they were called doodlebugs back then.
You know, with some finesse of the body (maybe a pickup?) and some structure reinforcement this wouldn’t be a bad looking custom
Too bad, the wagon I liked…
But the 4 musicians(w/at least 2 others) really “blew the top off”.
“…there were several AMC “conversions…”
liked the red “Scorpion” punkinsnad had/showed on here this month.
W/the wide trac & 5 oh they said “it moved”.

You beat me to it, Mike, thanks!
Glad to help Scotty! I think it is good when some of these vehicles show up later and you know the out come. Jeez, I need closure at times. Keep up the great work!
