Choo Choo Customs: 1987 Chevrolet El Camino SS
For sale in Medford, Oregon is this 1987 Chevrolet El Camino SS Choo Choo Custom. It is equipped with a 5.0 liter V8 engine and automatic transmission. With 4 days left in the listing here on eBay, the seller has the Buy In Now price set at $15,000.
Chevrolet dealers sold the Choo Choo Customs, Inc. version of the El Camino SS from 1983 to 1987. The car was built with the reliable LG4 305 cubic inch V8 engine. However, this is not the same L69 190 horsepower engine that was installed in the Monte Carlo SS. I believe the LG4 305 cubic inch V8 had an H in the VIN and the output in 1987 was 165 horsepower and 250 lb ft of torque.
The blue velour interior looks exceptional and the car is optioned nicely with tilt wheel, power windows, power locks air conditioning (not working) and a full gauge package. The conversion by Choo Choo Customs, Inc. of Chattanooga, Tennessee included a special front end, aerodynamic side skirts, hood bulge and SS graphics.
The seller states that the paint is not perfect but the body is straight. The car is equipped with after market wheels and the odometer reflects 132,000 miles. The seller is having some type of delay getting the title for the car so that might turn off a few buyers. What do you think of this clean El Camino SS?

I always thought these look really ugly,
with that cheesy-looking front end.
El Camonte? Really…
Whenever someone does an aftermarket modify I always shake my head.
My neighbor did the same to a Corvette and wanted 18k for a car worth 10k in an effort to recover on his investment.
The car was not stock anymore and got points graded off at the shows.
I offered him a sweet cash deal, but he turned my offer down.
He wound up getting 40 % less! He would have gotten more from my offer.
A wise man once said to me… “Remember, your best offer is usually the first offer you get.”
The owner of the ‘Vette was a “Financial Planner.” Go figure.
A 5.0 liter mill of this year is not the best power plant, imho, and too many miles.
I had an ‘87 Elco with the same drivetrain.
I bailed out of it and sold it to a buddy with a net profit of $400.
Win some, loose some.
Doubt it will go for $15 K, but I could be wrong.
Car dealing is a 💩 shoot!
These aren’t technically aftermarket conversions in that they were ordered through Chevrolet and arrived at dealers with the SS equipment installed. It’s much the same process as Shelby Mustangs and Hurst/Olds. Sunroofs, T-tops, and 1980s convertibles were also frequently subcontracted to third party installers who did their modifications off-site.
In general, though, I agree with you. If your modifications can’t easily be reversed, you’re probably hurting its value.
CCFisher,
Thank you, for binding in agreement.
Beep, beep!

Great interior, and as Phil wrote: crap motor, lotta miles. I’d like a nice ’87 with the FI 4.3 V6, no extended nose, and no “coffin rails” along the bedsides.
I’d park it next to my ’60 ElCo, but drive it more.
That padded dash looks cheesy…..
If you look again thats only a dash cover.
I don’t see $15K here. Maybe half that.
I live in Chattanooga and in their heyday Choo Choo Customs had a large real estate footprint comprised of a large customization facility and a paved lot full of either new vehicles to be customized or those already completed. I always thought and still do that most of their customizations were on the gaudy side.
Yes! Pretty much everything that ChooChoo Customs cranked out was gaudy. As a former resident of Chatt, I too can recall the site where their operations once existed. It’s a wonder they didn’t have a saw mill on the premises to crank out the miles of tacky oak trim that they loved to fill those van interiors with.
I do a lot of elcaminos and they sell good, but when you see a choo choo RUN,these are hidious looking in bread morphadites(sorry for the .03 percent that think they are cool)if the nose is moved back 14 inches it will improve the appearance the Monte nose overhang makes the body disproportionate but good luck to seller
Timmyt,
Say, you weren’t the same “Timmy” that missed school for a week after running into the back of that blue behemoth ‘59 Chrysler featured here last week are you?
Apparently, the fate of Timmy has yet to be known.
Fn: Sure be cool if the car could talk and tell the tales it’s owners mischief. 💃🏻
Wasn’t there recently a wanted posting on Barnfinds for one of these things? I know I saw a wanted ad somewhere.
I’d be a player for this but not at the listed price, the one thing it has going for it is the fact it is the last year of the El Camino. Gutless car and still very much a smog dog here in CA. Too many negatives here to pull the trigger. Good luck to the seller.
