Hemi Wagon! 1962 Dodge Dart Ramcharger Tribute
Dart was a basic car throughout its lifespan. It began life as a lower-priced full-size model, then was downsized to a lower-priced midsize model, and was reintroduced in 2012 as a lower-priced compact. Mopar being Mopar, though, they decided to throw the biggest engine they could shoehorn in it at every step of the way, and we’re left with this monstrosity of American drag racing engineering. Built in 1995 from two rust-free Darts, this two-door wagon is rocketed from a standstill by a Hemi and features a custom racing livery. Under the hood is a replacement 426 Hemi V-8 engine. The biggest engine Dodge put in the Dart from the factory is, to my knowledge, a 413, so this car is a little more than stock, beyond the wacky but practical body style. The seller is “not a Mopar guy,” but gives as much information as they are able to. The engine is a replacement crate engine from approximately 1990 running a 10:1 compression ratio so you can run it on pump gas. It drives the rear wheels through an A-727 three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and an 8¾” rear end. No word on numbers but it’s safe to say you won’t have trouble getting up to highway speeds.
Underneath there is zero rust. The two donor cars (a two-door hardtop and a wagon) were straight and rust-free when they were hacked up to create this creative piece of automotive art you see today. It is said to handle well, and doesn’t overheat. They include a few images of the undercarriage, but I’ll leave that for you to peruse at your leisure. There’s no rust, what more can be said?
Inside, the interior is all new. Beautiful red leather upholstery, new electrics, and a beefy sound system mean you’ll be comfortable, but no air conditioning means you’ll need to open the windows to let all the heat that undeniably comes from that engine out of the car. 426 cubic inches is 6.9 liters for our metric friends, and that is a huge engine. This is undeniably a unique car, and practical, too. Have a family you want to take drag racing with you? Do you want something older than a Buick Grand National? Do you want a Nomad but you’re a Mopar fan and just can’t bring yourself to own a Chevrolet? Well, have I got the car for you!

An interesting conversion for sure. The ‘builder made the Dart wagon a 2dr. hardtop, rather than leaving it a pillared 4dr. wagon. Too bad Chrysler never made these in hardtop configuration like the Town & Country wagons.
I’d love it if it were a 340 or 383, would be a much more drivable car and I wouldn’t own a car I couldn’t drive the hell out of!
I guess you could put a slant six in t and make it real boring. The motor is what makes that car in my opinion. It’s very unique!

It’s just whacky enough I like it. The big concern I have it looks like there is some form of line running over the left exhaust pipe. I don’t think that’s from gas tank but I don’t know what the heck it is.
Not practical IMO on the street but should be right at home on the strip.
A 426 is a seven-liter.
Actually, it’s just under 7 liters, as is a 427. A 428 is just over 7 liters…hence the fact that they called them Galaxie 7-Liters.
This should definitely shorten the time it takes to get to Fire Lake!

1962 was the only year The Dodge was a mid size car ; after 62 they were compacts replacing the Lancer name .
Dodge built factory Hemi Dart drag cars. All the lightweight goodies and straps for the windows and non adjustable seats. Asymmetrical rear suspension if I’m not mistaken. Highly sought after.

It’s an interesting car for sure, but shouldnt be taken too seriously. After all, if it handles well and doesn’t overheat, load up and stall out then part of the experience is missing!
Ramcharger who? To be clear, and someone hopefully will correct me, but I don’t remember a Ramcharger wagon, most of these were used as push cars, and I read, the hemi came out in ’64. It’s a nice tribute to probably one of the most successful early factory drag racing teams. Chrysler was selling speed and poured a ton of money, in support and dealer promotions. They wanted to be on top of the heap, and not much has changed.
