Craigslist Find: 1962 Porsche 356 B Super 90
While looking for new finds online, we came across this 1962 Porsche 356 B Super 90 located in Lake Tahoe, California. The seller claims that the car runs and drives well with only a few flaws. One fender has a ding, there is rust under the battery, and a tear in the interior. Being a Super 90, this 356 is much more desirable than a base model for good reason.
With their flat 4 cylinder engines, 356’s were not high power automobiles, but the Super 90 was fitted with a higher performance engine. The name was taken from the engine’s horsepower rating of 90 DIN which is about 100 HP. The engine had many upgrades over the standard one including upgraded cooling and an oil sump. Although not as special as a 356 Carrera, this car would as much fun at a much lower cost.
We would want to verify that there is not more rust hidden underneath. These 356’s are know to rust badly and it could get real expensive real fast. It would be interesting to learn if this is the original paint or if it has been re-sprayed. We always like original paint better because you can be sure that there are no surprises from previous repairs hiding underneath the surface. As evidenced by the blue license plate, this car has been registered since the 70’s and has lived most if not all of its life in California, so it is likely that this car is very solid.
The interior on this car is in decent condition with a few problem areas. Although not a screaming deal, the asking price of $30,000 seems fair for a clean driver. We would use the ding on the fender and the rust under the battery as bargaining chips. After fixing the little things, we would clean up the interior and start driving it.
