Amazing One-Owner Survivor: 1970 Mustang Boss 302
For feature cars I prefer a great Barn Find story. Failing that the car should definitely be unrestored. This one triggered my instinct of “Restored… Pass,” then I saw “all-original,” one of the most abused phrases in all of Automobilia. However this one-owner 1970 Ford Boss 302 Mustang features a Marti Report and other documentation to support the scrutiny of these claims. Thanks to reader Michael who eyeballed this sweet pony car in Spring Lake, Arizona where it awaits a new owner with a listing here on Phoenix, Arizona craigslist and a serious asking price of $129,900.
Though not perfect, this 48 year-old Medium Blue Metallic paint holds a shine that most cars from early in this century would envy. Ford’s Boss 302 Mustang gave buyers the closest thing to a Trans Am racer available. In fact, Ford won the 1970 SCCA championship with the racing versions of this fine ride.
More blue inside, just as nice as the paint. I love the plain Hurst shifter sticking up out of the carpet. Who needs that extra weight of a console when you’re hammering the Hog Pen at VIR?
This view looks the most like a nearly 50-year-old place of business. Ford beefed up this high-strung small-block with a thicker deck, four-bolt mains, and high nickel-content steel. Those parts along with the high-flowing Cleveland heads, intake, and forged rods worked to make power and survive the stresses of sustained high RPM operation (thanks to cjponyparts.com for some details). This view also shows why the engine-attached through-hood scoop became known as a “shaker.” Rated at 290 HP on paper, the 302 cubic inch Boss made 374 HP in this mustangandfords.com dyno test. Are these spoilers adjustable? This one looks like it is setup to create lift, not downforce. Nice ride, way out of my price range.
Nope.
I stand corrected.
They are adjustable. I have a 1970 Mach 1 with a factory spoiler. All you have to do is loosen 1 bolt on each support pillar and you have free reign to adjust the spoiler to any angle of your pleasing.
Jake is correct as one bolt on each spoiler perch controls how you want it. This one featured is almost where ours is adjusted at and where the angle is usually is a personal preference to owner’s liking. Nice car but why Craigslist and not a auction ?
Yes they are but they do not do anything for performance of the car. They are for looks and I personally have never been a fan. The 69-70’s already have great lines and a “duck” tail. Integrated spoilers look good but wings are for airplanes. My 70 Mach has one unfortunately. I’ve thought about removing it like I did on my 69 fastback I used to have.
Nice Stang, probably my favorite style after the 67-68 fastback. But man, them prices!! Whew….
…. but if one was going to be worth it, it probably doesn’t get any better than this.

Jay, check out the Mustangs on eBay. Prices have gone out of sight compared to 18 months/2 years ago. Some are worth the asking price, but many are way out of line for what they are; nothing special with regard to options, condition, etc….
The car looks great. The price doesn’t look great.
What’s truly amazing is the HP and torque ratings on this engine. Take a look at the specs on the 2018 four banger with a turbo, you’ll want five of those instead for the same price!
No I wont. This car is more than its power ratings. You can have a dozen pocket rockets, combined they won’t gather the crowd this does.

I always avoid new cars at classic car shows because, i don’t want to look at cheap plastic covered engines or cheap plastic ugly mirrors or cheap ugly plastic trim around the side windows or at the cheap plastic at the base of the windshield! Why are the new modern ones not parked on the street or in many driveways? Their counterparts in the 60’s were! They were not hiding in garages OWNED by the rich few. How many millenials OWN one or even have a driver’s license? Who’s driving them? The new one, like the mustang 2 looks like a toy! IT’S TOO SMALLLLLL!!! With a total joke of a back seat(you’ll need 2 stangs if you got 3 good friends!) & a rear deck so short they had to put in grandma’s trunk lid for weenies that extends all the way down to the “bumper” – same with camaro. & a “great” choice of interior colors, as long as you like grey or black. & a laughable number sold, compared to what they sold in the old days – i saw mustangs & camaros parked all OVER the place on the street brand new in the ’60s(now i can go a WEEK without seeing even ONE modern one!!) & you didn’t have to LEASE them because you could order them EXACTLY the way you wanted with or without more than 50 separate distinct options & 15 exterior colors available even on base cars, so most middle class could
O W N their own uniquely equipped one. IMO, p/w & p/b & a/c(unless you live in the deep south) are for BABIES or geriatrics.
I’m 65 & i NEVER owned a car with any of those 3 options!
& very few avg mainstream cars back then HAD them.
It’s not the motor in these new cars that makes them – it’s the trans & other things. Try putting a 3 speed non lockup auto(or a 4 speed manual) & mechanical fan & bias ply tires & monstrous 60’s a/c compressor & REAL turn-the-wheel-with-1-finger power steering on a new one & see what happens. They replaced the decent front end of the too small 2005 stang with an ugly frog end to make things even worse today.
& ford is too lazy to give the shelby stang it’s OWN UNIQUE TAILITES after how many years!?
I stopped driving newer cars when they stopped offering an ALL BLUE interior. Absolutely NO exCUSE for that!! Not at today prices!
What a mustang GT costs today, it BETTER be faster than a ’69 $3000 mach 1!
I wonder how long all those IRS cv joints in the new pony cars are going to last, compared to a ford 9 inch or GM 12 bolt or a Dana rear. Last of all, keep the hood shut to keep me from laughing at the hood prop rod on a new $60k shelby.

Great color. If I recall the spoilers came from the factory with that tilt. I doubt they had much real effect on the car at the speeds it was typically driven.
6 figures is a lot for any car but this one will probably get that much. But, as has been mentioned on this site previously, better hurry up and sell it before the market dies. Literally.
I agree. Very nice Survivor. To the right buyer this guy may get his price. There is going to be a lot of buyers remorse when the bottom falls out. Many people think they have gold on wheels parked in the garage. It can’t go on forever.
It will go on until the generation that priced these beyond the reach of younger generations dies off.
Right now we we are into their 401K money. Most people under 50 cannot afford a purchase like this and have largely tuned out this market. That should start to catch up and be reflected in prices within the next 10 years.
Agree, already seen in the leveling off in pricing of the 55 Chevrolets and the decline in pricing of the post war hotrods. But, I bet in today’s market he gets close to what he’s asking.

Spring Lake isn’t in AZ – it’s in Michigan. The closest we have is Spring Valley and it doesn’t look anything like this! Just because it’s on Phoenix CL doesn’t mean it’s near here.

This is barn finds. Not race car finds. A car doesn’t need a lot of horsepower to be fun to drive. C’mon, you know that. The hot hatches of the ’80s and ’90s were a blast too.
Barnfinds is about enjoying cars from across the spectrum. I like this car but not sure how much I’d enjoy it at this price.
Or buy a new GT350 that would spank this one on every level and have a warranty! And they DO get attention at shows too. Judging what Boss 302’s are selling for now at auction, this one is late to the party. But you never know, originality might add 50K to a perfectly restored one. But I don’t think so.
In the day I don’t recall ever seeing one this nice. All of the ones I drove or rode in the late 70’s were used and abused, they way they were meant to be. It was a great engine to wind out and bang through the gears, very visceral. Amazing how this one wasn’t.

While I agree today’s Stangs, and many other makes way faster, better handling, luxury and air, and seats that grab and hold, one would buy history and prestige in this ride; what those cost is up to your bank account.
Rode in a 300+horse KIA for less than half this car is asking, 8 so auto, twin turbos, over 100 1/4 mile, top speed estimated 150+, Excuse my chauvanism, “A mans auto”.
Yet 48 years from now I bet that Kia will not hold the allure then, than what this or of any other Boss 302 Stangs hold today.
Drove when new , my favorite Z is 70 and which on the street drove the wheels off any stang.

I have an original 427 Cobra, is my very special one! Also have from 64 1/2 up to 2012! All GT except for the Cobra! Like I said I will soon show them to everyone if it’s okay with Barn Finds! I will have to find out if it’s okay for me to just show them in the comments section! Soon as I can get out there to take some pictures! I really don’t have any other than my 2012 on my phone! I use my phone for Internet! I am to old for the damn computer! LOL
If I’m thinking correctly, which is up for debate sometimes, the ’70 Boss 302 engine used smaller valve heads compared to the ’69 which was supposed to help out down lower in the power curve, I don’t know if that really worked or not. Very peaky engine for a street car, same for the early Z28’s, but for me the Boss 302 is one of the best looking Mustangs ever. The Boss 429 is my all time favorite looking Mustang, and the ’71 Boss 351 has what I would consider the best street engine of all three. I agree with the author, that straight up Hurst shifter coming out of the floor has a certain appeal to it as opposed to some duded up console, gives it more of a race car look.
Very surprised to see one this clean after all these years, most were beaten and beaten hard and why not, that is what they were built for. Not a grocery getter by any means.😎
If you want to entertain yourself, go dig up the 1970 Consumer Reports where they tested one of these. They absolutely destroyed it. Little did they know, LOL!
Oh I watch them…closely. Would love to own a 67-68 Fastback, this style being my next choice…just way outta reach for me at this time. It’s a beautiful car. Personally, I grew up with and currently own, a fox body Mustang. It certainly isn’t one of these gems, but it’s a Mustang and I love it.
Jay, as soon as I can get out of town to my garage if you are truly a Mustang fan you are going to be shocked at the 11 stangs I have been collecting over the years! All in mint condition! These are my favorite classic Mustangs but of course they are now priced way out of reach of the average guy. However the recent Boss 302 was quite a good car and with the new Shelbys and even with just the latest GTs there are plenty of great Mustangs available. I bought a ’70 coupe a couple of years ago and fixed it up and drove it, so That’s one way to have an affordable classic. More power to anyone that can afford these rare cars but I love the new Mustang and think it is hands down the best Mustang ever! I currently have an ’07 coupe and a ’96 GT convertible which Is a great little budget performance Mustang. As an enthusiast it’s my job to find the best buy in a fun car.
I wonder if purchasing one of the 2018 Boss Mustangs today vs. this car will be shown to be a better investment 10 years from now.

The Mustang Boss 302 is a cool and limited production stang and will always attract attention. If you look at auction prices, this car is not way off.
Any limited production, specialty car produced today will have the potential to become valuable in the future. Regular transportation as we know it will disappear when electric cars are forced upon us. Hope they make exceptions for “collector” cars in future years.

Some here have said he will get his asking price and that shocked me as when I looked at the car and the price I was going to write: “$129.9 K! Ha Ha Ha! ” I think I’ll stick with that. If gets his price I’ll stick my head in the gas oven because that will indicate the world has gone completely crazy and I can’t cope in such an environment.
