All Original 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi!!!
You can’t get much more American than a bright red Hemi Mopar, this 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T is an incredibly rare example, 1 of 4, that is red on red with a 426 Hemi. It is also an un-restored survivor with the lowest miles of the 4 remaining at 25,312. Located in the St. Louis, Missouri area, you can view more information about this $179,900 vehicle here on Craigslist. Thank you, Pat L, for the tip.
There are no pictures of the engine. The listing states that the car has the original 426 Hemi with Shaker hood and an automatic transmission. It can be assumed that the car does run and drive, considering that the post mentions the mileage. While all of this does seem amazing, it is perplexing a car of this pedigree, at this price, with such little photographic evidence is listed on a site like Craigslist.
Unfortunately, there are no photos of the interior either. You can see some of it via the photos through the windows of the car, to verify that it is in fact red. According to the listing, they state that this is the only Challenger left of the 4, with power windows. The car was purchased by the current owner in 1979, and they have never driven it in the elements, except the sun, since.
Significant mention of appraisals has been mentioned in the post. While some of them have come in at just under $200,000, the seller has priced it closer to the “excellent” rating by Haggerty, of $177,000, saying they are motivated to sell. While the seller seems to talk a good talk, it would be best to do your homework and dig into this one to assure, before handing over six figures, that the car is in indeed, as advertised.

Well it used to have a luggage rack on the trunk lid and the shaker looks added since it and the hood surround are a brighter shade of red. They could just be repainted, and . . . I don’t believe the Challenger was available with a body colored scoop (unlike the ‘Cuda) so the scoop should be Argent Gray. Looks like a very nice car apart from that.
I pay money for a reverse phone lookup app, I get soooo many calls that it’s worth the coin. The phone number listed the Craigslist ad is only a “call to” number, not a “call back” number. It’s used by Mister Cooper , a mortgage company.
This means the ad people want you to email them, so they can use this spoof ad to string you along and try and get your money. I’ve seen this before.
Interesting, you can get power windows in the 1970 Challenger (they are in the brochure) but they are gone by the 1973 model year brochure. And I had thought my brother’s ’73 Challenger SE, which was pretty much loaded, had a power driver’s seat but that wasn’t available at all though there was a manual adjuster that gave you four kinds of adjustments, not just forward / back. They didn’t offer AM FM with tape either at that point, another thing I mis-remembered.
This Challenger is quite an interesting find – I hope someone doesn’t buy it for $177K and flip it for twice that.
I see he spent a whole 5 dollars to sell a 200000 dollar car on craigslist . Atleast put it on feebay for this kind of money.

Grew up with a 70 Challenger R/T convertible, 383, slapstick auto….it had power windows, power top, and that 4-way adjustable drivers seat. I’d sell my soul to have that car back!
I had a ’70 Challenger R/T convertible myself. It was red, with black side stripes. Red interior. It was a 383 auto, but it had a column shifter. I found out (from Glen Cambell, who approached me in a parking lot) that this was an ex Mod Squad car. I guess Julie had to sit somewhere. I sold it for $2400. I wish I had that back!
Selling your soul to have that preferably red hot Challenger R/T Convertible Devil is more fun, than learning to play the Harp if you don’t mind me saying so.
What makes this machine so highly sought after is the 426 hemi, that’s the main factor of the high price. Seems kinda odd there would be no pictures if that. Happy fourth!
At $180K, I believe more than 7 pictures should be included, especially one of the motor which is, after all, the ONLY reason that anyone would consider paying that price. Poorly done, Mr. Seller, poorly done.
If I were to make an offer on any car with that price set, I would call and ask a few questions then take a personal look at location. Pictures are for the curious, not the buyers.

I read the CL ad and it is worded weird. I get scammers trying to buy stuff I have put up for sale and they talk that way.
Also it appears this exact car was listed on BF over a year ago (Mar 14, 2018) with the same suspicions I just listed. Good steward, thoughful etc…. beware

Although this is a nice low mileage car in very good condition, just because it is a 1 of 4 red on red 1970 Hemi Challenger does not make it Rare… the “perception” to automobile enthusiasts is that it is rare,.. but it is not and that what they are trying to sell you, it is just another red RT Hemi Challenger, now if your gullible enough to perceive it to be rare you are going to overpay for this car all day long.. the same thing goes for that 50-year-old Hemi motor, the perception is that the mighty 426 will blow the doors off anything on the road, simply, it was fast for its “period in time” 50 years ago but there are many 4 cylinders that beat this all day long. I do like seeing low mileage cars that have been kept in good condition including this challenger, but simply they are a dime a dozen for sale everywhere and to pay $180000 is just crazy…

There are challengers for sale everywhere just look at craigslist, ebay, hemmings, classiccars, oldcaronline ect. and so on… the fact is dodge made thousands of these cars and given that a lot of the have been crushed there are still many many for sale. John’s perception is correct, they are a dime a dozen just get online and look.

I just read the Craigslist ad and this guy is pushing too hard to sell this car. IF it were actually as great as he is trying to make it seem it would sell itself without all the B S there is something fishy going on with this car. JMHO
By the way, on bias ply tires these were VERY traction limited 0-60 and 1/4 mile however as anyone who has done there homework knows the 426 Hemi tuned with headers traction bars and slicks can run 11s in the quarter. Don’t think any 4 cylinder would blow it’s doors off on a race track.
Oh, not true at all. The Mustang turbo four has more net HP I believe. Face it, the days of being king of the hill are over for this old boy, just like those of us who lusted after it in our youth. The torch has been passed to a new generation of cars and car buyers, we are soon dust, so it is as it should be. BTW, the cheapest Tesla would embarrass this old thing.

I have a feeling that a lot of comments on here come from people that never owned or driven these types of cars when they were new or a few years old. Sorry, I’am 64 years old. Having a icon like this hemi would sure be nice but the money these demand now is just insane!! You could get a new one with the scat pack extra for a fraction of what this one cost with a warranty!!!

I have read all the things said about how old cars just won’t hold their own against “new” cars, that may be true speed wise. The new cars just don’t have the”moxie” that the old iron has. Just listen to a 440, or a hemi, or a Boss9 idle, that sound is enough to give a real car guy goose bumps. sure new cars are nice, but give me “old iron” anytime!!!
Yes, I like to hear a horse go clip clop down a cobblestone path too, but I will never tell myself it is superior, different maybe, but never better. What I will fully agree with is nostalgia, and that is a wonderful thing, just be careful how much you are willing to pay for it and once you have, is it always going to be worth the price you paid for it? I see many old car buyers remorseful after purchase, the reality isn’t what it was in their dreams before buying. I wish there was a good way to rent old cars for a few hours at a reason able price, I think that would kill the ownership desire from a lot of potential buyers, get it out of your system and separate the rose colored memories from the cold hard facts of reality.
I am remorseful every single time my wife buys a new car. It drops in value every time.

if it really is for sale i believe it will sell to a potential buyer that has the right cash. i believe hemi is testing the waters and does not want to go through the bull dealing with wish i hads and used to owns. i myself have been trying to sell a 73 ta for 4 years now and its been sold three times to wants its. after they say they want it you pull the ads cause its surely sold. and then the circus begins. there coming to look at it really this time and no one shows. my flight got cancelled going to an auction this week. no one has yet to even look at my car just the ad. and thats been 4 years with 100’s of contact potential buyers. seems like most buyers want to get the car and after purchasing it come back and complain this whatchamejiggy is broke can you send some cash back. well look before you buy and we will all be happy. and then the lookie loo’s say the seller does not really want to sell it. well the truth is we want to sell it but just without the games. to HEMI OWNER stand your ground and show 5 pictures and if there really interested tell them cash is what talks and my prices go up not down. and this way the bull++itters can go on wishing they had. only tell them you want it in hundred dollar bills and the price or value of your prize posession goes up not down…so if your going to buy something buy it like you say your going to or hit the road. dont waste time with mr. excuses cause there will always be more excuses to come. honesty will get you further in this world so let them look if there going to look. and just tell them standing in front of you with there offer is the best offer. good luck HEMI. are the days of honesty and truthfullness gone forever. my father did more buisness with just a handshake than i have ever seen since his death. what a wonderful fatherless world we have to live in today… is there no honor anymore. nuff said
I could be mistaken but I thought that 70 Challenger RT and 70 Cuda AAR had the antenna mounted on the right rear quarter panel not the front fender as this car has. I’m sure of this in the case of the Cuda AAR which was a 1970 only. Check the Year One website for antenna parts and you’ll see what I mean.

Jeez guys, why the moaning here about new and old? I’m of the opinion that if you like new, and support new, and bang on about new, then get off of here and leave enthusiasts to their pining for big inch, big cam dinosaur musclecars.

We’re taking about THIS 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, aren’t we? Other than the fact that it’s NOT a Barn Find, (and I know that term has any number of definitions!) why are we comparing it to ANYTHING other than another 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, or at the very least some other 49 year-old muscle car? How does anyone seriously compare this car to anything modern, and WHY? Is anyone going to buy this car and say “….but my boy-racer hatchback is quicker and faster”? Can we get real here?
But getting back to where we started, reading Brentton’s comments, why would someone try to sell a car that has a potential value of well into six-figures on a platform like Craigslist? And with very few pictures to document the car’s condition? And don’t you need to be “curious” BEFORE you become a “buyer”? Makes more sense, because NO ONE in their right mind is going to send this fellow a check without eyeballing the car, are they?
The seller needs to furnish a lot more information if he expects to move this car, but his choice of platform raises more questions than it answers. .
Someone kinda said it, I like the “THUMP”, “THUMP”, “THUMP”,…… where as the new cars do not have. The electronics in the new cars will kill their life span. The older ones are simple and repairable. I broke down many of times and was able to get my car home, with just an adjustment, but the newer ones you need to call a tow truck. Just my two cents on some of the above comments,buyer, if you want it bad enough, have the funds, buy it. Seller, if you really don’t want to sell it, raise the price and maybe (see above statement). Isn’t that “Free Enterprise”?
My old muscle (super) cars of old were pretty unreliable, used to be handy with a wrench and more then once I called for a tow. My newer cars have great performance (straight line and around a corner), get incredible MPG, and all have run over 200K miles, and over all very reliable.
Tell me what stock 4cyl. can turn 11 second 1/4 miles. Why does the Hemi need tuning, slicks etc. because it doesn’t have a bunch of electronic nannies( or is it nininnes) to control everything. Sure the Hellcat demon will trounce any muscle car and anyone can get behind the wheel and turn a decent 1/4 but with a 60s 70s muscle car you actually have to drive AND SHIFT to get its best.
We love our muscle cars of our youth; as said yeah I may be a dinosaur and the cars I love maybe but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Just for clarification I have had automotive grease under my nails since I was eleven and I owned and street raced my 1969 SC/RAMBLER HURST so I’m not B.S. ing when I share my opinions.
Hemi cars almost always bring big money, depends on platform they’re sitting in. I’ve seen some mid sixties cars go under six figures with Hemis simply based on less desirable body. Red E-body cars are the only ones that received the color match shakers. For the doubters that talk about bias plys and performance look up the pure stock and F.A.S.T. racing. All cars must run original size bias plys ans in F.A.S.T. they are in the 9’s in the 1/4. How much money had to be put into that 4 cylinder to keep up? The Turbo 4 Mustang required a power adder to get similiar power and will never sound as cool. I have nothing against newer cars and can’t deny the stats that come with them. I just personally enjoy the raw feel of and old car with a V8.
i’m sure at one time in our great grandparents life they had said this wild 4 legged mustang has great beauty and control. why no machine would even touch this wild horses power. i’ll bet they appreciated the raw bridaled power of a wild mustang except when the race was done you had to feed the horse also…
There is also much to be said for modern exhaust systems as opposed to our great-grand parent’s mustang tailpipes, too

One thing about the whole I’m faster than you stuff is there will always, without a doubt, always be somebody faster. Don’t care what kind of car it is..old, new, built at the factory or built in someones driveway. Driver skill has a big part of it, that’s two fold on these older screamers. I think we all learned that lesson at one time or another. Going from a 16 second high school ride Mustang to a low twelve second street/strip 428 Fairlane was a big eye opener for me. Yikes! That was my first time behind the wheel of a big inch sixties car, a ride I will never forget. Never!
Chevy guys were always on me about that dumb ‘stang, and I use to fire back about the hemi mopars being the deal they couldn’t handle, no Ford’s, the hemi of all things. Being this was in the early eighties one Camaro head stopped me and said “yeah but where are they, those HemiCudas? Never seen one.” Hit me right there I had never seen one in person either. To have owned and driven one of these back then would have been quite rare…and expensive. These were always rare, even new, but what an engine if you knew how to tune it. No other super car had quite that much status, not even the

Still waiting on what year turbo 4cyl mustang is faster then a hemi anything ! Old vs new as usual ill take the old any day over new as all my newer stuff keeps breaking down and costing a fortune to fix . Not one brand either . The old stuff is much easier to work on and i dont need a computer to give me a guess to whats wrong this week or throw parts at it . Take it for what ever its worth ,as for this hemi car do your own homework before you waste that kind of money !

Calling out all you Mopar freaks, 180k is a bargain basement price considering what you Mopar freaks were paying for them 10 to 11 years ago, like around one million for anything that had a hemi…… Me personally I pass on these junk Mopars. Much faster and better made cars available today for much much less. Wow!

Everyone has a different prospective in their cars or trucks. A hemi for prestige and a 340 for “Lots of Fun”. I drove some of the “BIG BOYS” years ago and never like the handling of them as I did the small blocks. Depending on the driver, the A-body 340’s would give most anyone a run for their money(stock). The E & B bodies were a little heavier, but still no slouch. Keith, I know you are trying to rile up some of the readers and some are playing along with you for the fun of it, but the old saying goes,”one persons junk is another ones treasure”. I do agree that autos of today are better engineered then the ones of earlier years, but when your computer goes out and replacement is around $3,500.00 or the tranny at $5,000.00 and your auto is just out of warranty, which is the biggest piece of crap? Don’t forget, these new muscle cars are $65,000.00 and up and drops in value everyday. I do agree some pricing are out of hand, but there may be someone willing to pay, so that is the reason for higher pricing. You can drop the price, but raising it (unless it’s a auction) is difficult to do once listed. So I say, make a fair offer if it is to be a keeper. If you are a flipper don’t cry on my shoulder.

As of two minutes ago, the Craigslist ad is still up, so if it’s a scam(and it very well could be because the car is listed in the St. Louis area but the post was placed in San Francisco!) why hasn’t anyone flagged it?
The car most definitely exists, because the person who placed the ad posted pictures of it. If it wasn’t his car to sell then that’s a whole other story, but the point that was being made (at least by one of us) was that IF this was what was being represented as a HEMI Challenger then Craigslist was a really foolish platform on which to try to sell it. That was the point of my original comment, and everything else, IMHO, is “noise”.
