All Original: 1962 Oldsmobile F-85 Cutlass
We have seen the words “all original” many times in the past – it often comes right before a seller goes on to list new paint, new upholstery, fresh engine rebuild, etc. The seller of this beautiful 1962 Oldsmobile F-85 Cutlass says that it’s all original and this time it looks like the real deal. This gorgeous car is on Craigslist in Wilmington, Ohio with an asking price of $7,500. Thanks to Ikey H. for sending in this tip!
Sharp. Sharp in looks and sharp in condition. Sharp in features being a Cutlass which was above the base model. Sharp in the horn-rimmed-glasses look of that front end with the front fenders flying out to the sides like that. This car is sharp. In 1961, the F-85 Cutlass would have been a two-door post body style only. The F-85 came in base trim as a four-door sedan, a two-door club coupe, and a station wagon in 1961 and in 1962 they added a hardtop F-85 Cutlass as seen here.
Oddly, for what is reported to be such a nice car, there are only (you know where I’m going with this) four photos and there are none showing the interior. Godfrey Daniel! (in my best W.C. Fields voice) The humanity! There is a photo showing the trunk, though, but none showing the interior at all. I must be out of the loop on Craigslist ads, maybe this is the new trend to not show photos of certain parts of vehicles that you’re offering for sale for not insignificant amounts of money. In any case, the trunk looks great. I hope the interior is equally as nice. I’m assuming that it looks something like this.
All isn’t lost, they included an engine photo! This isn’t the 215-hp Jetfire turbo and I don’t know if this is a 2-barrel or 4-barrel car, but this 215 cubic-inch aluminum V8 would have had either 155 hp or 185 hp depending on the carburetor. This car has 45,000 miles on it and other than saying that “everything works” and “all original uncut preserved classic you don’t see around”, there isn’t much info given about the car. Have any of you owned an Olds F-85 Cutlass?

I had a ’62 F85 Cutlass as my first car. It was white with a red interior and it did have the 185HP 215CI V8. This one appears to have the same engine. Nice find!
Hello I see u had a 62 cutlass ..I am in a lil jam my grandfather has the same car for years it has bin parked I am 35 so I know nothing about this car I am a mechanic thou I am asking to be helped in the right direction please anyone I just need to know what I need to get the car started as far as fuel does it use a mechanical fuel filter ,does this model use fuel sending unit ??

Hi Scotty. Lovely car. I haven’t heard the “Godfrey Daniel” exclamation since my Grandfather used it back in the 1950’s. I still use it and my Grandchildren often ask me why. I just tell them it reminds me of my Grandad and now the eldest at 22 uses it. I didn’t know that it came from W.C. Fields either so even at 79 I still learn something new EVERY day!
Nice looking car, and it look a fair deal too. If we’re new to they vintage car hobby this would be a good start. Looks like it needs very little to be on the road.

This is a post model. Those are chrome window frames. Some manufacturers would call it a thin post model that gives you the hardtop look.
I bought a 1963 f85 in1969 off a lot on hiway 99 in Seattle. I mowed lawns that summer and took the trunk lid off and put my mowers in there. I replaced one head gasket and almost threw the head to the ceiling as it was so light. That got my interest and later bought a Jetfire salvage engine complete. I don’t recall the fate of the car but I sold the Jetfire to a local guy named Baker who did marvels with the 215.The car had a 3 speed on the column and cost $295.

Only the tubocharged model was a hard top. The JET fire.
Did these have the corvair transaxle under them like the Pontiac Tempest? I’ve only seen one of those oddballs and it had the 4 cyl they created by slicing a Poncho V8 lengthwise..
Was this one of the GM models that had a rear mounted trans-axle with a “rope” type driveshaft? I probably don’t know what I’m rambling about. Can anyone explain or shed some light on this?
No, you’re thinking of the Pontiac Tempest. This Olds is built on the same basic platform (modified Corvair) but has a conventional drivetrain aside from the aluminum V8.
The engine was developed by Buick Division. Olds used it after making slight modifications to the heads, etc.
Your absolutely right AMC. I had a 62 tempest with the trans axle 3 speed stick. Was a pain in the ass to put a clutch in with that torque tube for a drive shaft.

This is my first car, except mine was a convertible with a white top and it had a red interior. Really gorgeous color. Mine had at least 90 coats of Classic Car Wax on it. Remember that stuff? Hard as a rock to apply, cramped the heck out of my fingers, but it had DIATOMS in it!
I never really knew for sure what that meant until recently. Apparently diatoms are a strain of algae that have hard silica shells. These are crushed to form a micro abrasive. It’s actually diatomaceous earth, but DIATOMS sounds so much cooler.
At any rate, my car was the high-zoot model with the 185 hp engine. Removing the air cleaner revealed one of the prettiest 4bbl carburetors ever made. The Jetfire (all one word) had the turbo boosted motor with 215 hp. The engines were cool but suffered blow-by at the higher mileages.
Naturally at age 16 I would have loved to have a new ’66 442 or SS 396, but looking back (as I have often done over the years) this was a pretty spectacular car. The lines and proportions are spot-on though I would try to source some 14″ wheels to fill out the wheel openings.

My mom owned a ’62 F85 convertible. Cutest car I’d ever seen. Of course, I was only 10 at the time, so… But those little tires were irresistable. When we came out one morning to discover it had a flat, I offered to change it and roll the tire around the corner to Kuball’s Union station to have it repaired. My folks were happy. But I wanted more! So, two days later, I pounded a nail into another of the tires and, when it was flat an hour or two later, offer to change it for my mom again. And so it was a couple of days later, I was out there with the hammer and nail again when I heard a knock from the front window. I looked over to see my mom frowning. I came clean, but said it was just so much fun changing her tire, I couldn’t help it. Thankfully, my folks were understanding and, when my birthday rolled around a few months later, my dad presented me with the most memorable gift of my life. He had bought the beater college car from the son of my Godfather for $25 and presented to me on my birthday. It was a very ragged 1952 Austin A40 Sports, but to me it was as valuable as a primo Bugatti. My best friend and I drove the wheels off the old Austin over the next couple of years in the big, vacant lot behind our home. It also started a life long love of Austins. I’m 66 now and my wife and I own five 1950s Austins, though I’ve yet to find an early GS2 A40 Sports like my first car. I will one day, along with a ’62 F85 convertible like mom’s.

I traded for one of these was my 2nd car drove it over 100000 miles during that time I overhauled the engine and replace the automatic with a 3 speed. a very fun car didn’t have much for brakes in our mountainous area all manual adjust. It had the 185 hp engine it liked premium fuel. It was Honduras Maroon as this one is and had maroon colored interior with bucket seats. the automatics were a problem and mine had shifting issues.
Was my first car in 1979. I still have it. Just pulled out of the building it rested in for 33 years. A lot more to the story. The wife finally saw it and said can we get it on the road?

Bought my first one as a dealer demo for under $2k. A 2 door coupe with 155 hp and 3 speed manual. Great little car. I really wanted a 6 cyl. but they only had the V-8. I got over 18 mpg and wish I had it today.
I drove several of these when I worked at a Buick dealership while in high school.(’65/’66)

Obviously this is an older post but I wanted to update everyone that I own this car as of June of this year with just a hair under 46k miles. Purchased for my wife for her birthday and let me tell you its an amazing vehicle. Lowest mileage in fact of everything we own including newer vehicles up to 2017. We have put just over 300 miles on since owning it and only had to do a minor tune up and replacing some rubber that is drying out. Its still got all 5 of the 4 lug wheels including the polyglass spare with black outside paint and GM Gray on the inside of the rim and its spotless probably never seen the road. We actually run a set of torque thrust 15’s on it now with re-drilled hubs but i’m trying to keep as much origional as i can and didn’t even get rid of the date coded plug wires and coil when i tuned it up. Its a great car and an even better buy given the rarity.
There is another in Cincinnati recently pulled from a barn for $2500 that I may try to save at least for parts if the rust is too bad since its also a F85 Cutlass model with the 4bbl 215 and silver/gray two tone interior.
