It took only a couple years following the introduction of the 1964 ½ Ford Mustang for the pony car craze to explode. For 1967, there were cars to support just about every possible preference. Economical? Yep! Sporty, definitely. Straight-up muscle? For sure. What about luxury? You bet! That’s where this car comes in. A more luxurious version of the Mustang, this one-owner 1967 Mercury Cougar is up for sale here on eBay, with a bid of $7,100 at the time of writing but 7 days until the auction ends, so it’ll likely end up selling for quite a bit more. It’s located in Pomona, California. Thanks to Larry D for the tip!

New in 1966 for the 1967 model year, the Cougar was up against like likes of the new Camaro and Firebird, as well as the redesigned Barracuda and updated Mustang. While the Cougar and the Mustang shared some of the same platform, the exterior of the Cougar has different sheet metal with more of a sculptured look, unique front and rear taillights (headlights are hidden behind the grill), and a “European” style interior. The body of this Cougar looks to be in good shape, with no obvious rust issues. Glass looks perfect, as do the panel gaps and lines. I think that photos to document before/after the first time it is washed would be cool to see.

This Cougar is claimed to be all-original with just under 35,000 miles. I’m inclined to lean more towards 135,000 miles – the engine looks dirtier than I would have expected for 35,000 miles.  However, if this really is a one-owner car, then perhaps there will be some documentation to substantiate that claim.  Still, everything looks complete and tidy, with no obvious hack jobs or DIY wiring. Plus, you can see factory A/C. The seller says that the car has been parked for 35 years without being started, and doesn’t tell us whether the engine even turns over. It has a 289 cubic inch V8, which would have had 200hp if equipped with a 2-barrel carburetor, which we can’t tell from the photos.

The pictures of the interior are extremely low-quality, but it seems as if everything has survived well. I don’t see any tears or rips on the seats, the dashboard looks to be in excellent shape, and all that is really needed is a good cleaning. I’d love to see some better interior photos, as well as images of the trunk pan and frame. However, this appears to be a solid candidate that won’t need a full restoration, but rather just some tinkering to get running again.
