Anniversary Alfa: 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super

Alfa Romeo is famous for its sports and racing cars, but they also produced some excellent sedans for those who needed the extra doors and space. The various Giulia models filled this need from 1962 through 1978, with engines of about 1.3 or 1.6 liters in various states of tune. Our car began life with a 1570 cc engine, but has had a 1750 cc engine with Veloce cams installed. This should make this little sedan perform like a 1960s sports car since the drive train and suspension are so similar to the Alfa sports cars of the day.
The odometer shows about 78K miles, and with rebuilt engine, transmission, and suspension this car should be good for many miles once the unnamed additional sorting that the seller mentions has been completed. The driver-grade restoration is described as having begun with a ‘mostly straight virtually rust free’ California car, and the photos appear to confirm that, including one photo of the underside taken with the car on a lift. The photo above shows the Kamm tail, which was designed to reduce aerodynamic drag. It has been said that these Giulia sedans have such good aerodynamics that they compare favorably with the early Porsche 911.
The interior of the Alfa Supers appears to be both simple and elegant at the same time. Large main instruments and a beautiful steering wheel with aluminum spokes dominate the driver’s view, with wood on the dash in the background. The upholstery, carpeting, headliner, and windshield are new and mostly came from Italy, and the dashboard is original.
The Super engine carries two dual choke Weber 40DCOE carbs, and with 1570 cc made 97 HP. With the extra displacement of the 1750 cc engine in this car we would expect that it would make well over 100 HP. These numbers don’t sound particularly impressive today, but in a car weighing about 2200 pounds the Alfa engine made the Giulia one of the best performing sedans in its day.

I never did find these attractive. The GTV was beautiful but this is just squared off and bland.
Ron, they are an acquired taste; remember, this is 60s European sedan styling, but you have to see in the flesh and pick up the little details, the scallops on roof and fenders, etc. are what make these…better drag numbers than a 65-67 911 so some actual thought went into the design, Ron. And ALL the same mechanicals in a 67 Giulia Super as in a 67 GTV so they are quite capable of holding their own, esp. with a 1750 motor. They are sleepers for sure…
One person’s bland is another person’s elegant in its simplicity. Looks pretty good from the driver’s seat, however you feel about the exterior.

I’ve never owned an import of any kind. Always owned mid sixties full size Fords and Mercurys. This car would make me want to own one. Definitely different.
